Moderatorits really in the discussion stage at the moment but if it comes to pass it could be a win win for our industry as part of idea means making the repair info more readily available
even if it goes ahead there will be a lead in time to allow the manufacturers to adjust

KeymasterIt will come to pass, they’ve stated so. 😉
Manufacturers will have to start planning now I imagine as they’ve really only got a couple of years.
Sealed units are going to be a no-no, be it tanks, fridge doors and so on that need taken apart to repair.
Parts have to be available for ten years and within 15 days if memory serves.
It doesn’t go far enough as cost isn’t addressed but that will come I expect.

KeymasterIt is going to become a legal requirement so manufacturers will be compelled to comply and I’d not like to be the first that doesn’t, then gets crucified by the EU as an example.
In the end, it’s the right thing to do for many reasons.
It’s also far greater in scope than just appliances, appliances are just the start of it.
But, if the UK somehow ever sorts Brexit and we do leave and do not maintain regulatory alignment with the EU which, as things stand looks extremely unlikely on this score, then we may not get the benefit of this in the UK. 🙁

Participantso when their telly packs up they will get it mended and not upgrade to the latest with all the new whistles and bells. same with computers phones etc. the only way this will happen is if the price of new goes up a lot and the price of mending goes down a lot. good luck with that.

KeymasterCorrect.
If this legislation has the desired effect then prices of new will rise, it’s inevitable as makers will have to fund the legacy support and the intent being to make products last longer = less waste.

KeymasterAnd here is the very real danger, the UK decides that we’re just not going to bother…
The link to the article is:
Sorry for the political nature of this, not something I normally do on here but it is utterly infuriating that something I and the WTA among others such as the Restart Project, have been battling to get for over a decade to help the repair industry and consumers may well be scuppered by political machinations surrounding Brexit that think somehow it’s a good idea to just not bother turning up.
So, whilst we may well get this, if we don’t leave the EU, we’ve had bugger all input and the UK is completely unrepresented.
And if we do leave, this will hardly be a priority, I’ve just a feeling there might be bigger fish to fry.
Maybe I’m just not believing enough.

Moderatorthe hope is that because lots of our appliances are also sold in the eu or made in the eu that manufacturers wont alter things just for the uk so we will get this by the back door so to speak
On a political note this election is going to be interesting, and a gauge of public opinion of the main parties, but you will always get the tribal voters who wont change so we will see
An election fought on the 12 Dec and the results on Friday 13th mmmmDave

KeymasterIt will yes.
But… 😉
With no way to enforce it in UK law brands can just do what they like, as they do now within the UK and, given they’re all UK or UK subsidiaries that doesn’t bode well.
I’d expect many to comply, especially the actual makers and their brands but all the rest, hell knows.
I’m a political junkie, don’t get me started on that. 😉

KeymasterThat’s my problem Dave in one word, “hopefully”. 🙁
No way to enforce it.

ParticipantMany machines are made in PRC and Turkey and they are both outside of the EU, will they have to comply if this comes to pass?
