KeymasterI have a Neff built in dishwasher S5443X1GB/12 that has suddenly started behaving strangely. At the end of a cycle there is water left in the bottom, plus all the indicator lights extinguish. What’s more I put it on last night and when I opened it this-morning, on top of the water/lights problem, it appeared to still be on the dry cycle as it was still very hot inside.
Once these lights have gone out I find it very difficult to reset the machine – i.e. holding down intensive and eco buttons does nothing. Eventually it seems to wake up and I can reset it (possibly after it’s cooled down)
I tried checking for a blockage in the pump, and checked the non-return valve (both fine). It does appear to be able to pump ok – if I hold down the intensive, normal, and eco buttons whilst powering on (which appears to put it into drain mode) it does drain out ok.
Any ideas?

Draining ‘time-out’ by the sound of it. Carefully check the pump impellor and flap valve again, there may be broken glass stuck down there (invisible in water so be careful?).
I recall to reset this model it’s a question of turning the main switch on then press and hold both the first and third buttons for up to 3 seconds, then shut the door. The machine should then drain for 60 seconds then stop!
Beyond that it will be engineer time and try our Repairs@ for a local firm in your area to sort it 😉
By the way, take my advice, never turn on machines late at night and then go to bed. Switch them on when you can keep and eye on them is sound advice and a way of avoiding the proverbial fire and flood scenario 😀

There doesn’t appear to be a blockage. First and third buttons do normally reset it but they don’t work once it gets into this state. If I leave it long enough (perhaps once it cools down) I can reset it and the water pumps out quickly enough. I wondered if there was some kind of thermal cutout?
I entered my postcode into the link, but no local engineer listed (Farnham, Surrey).
Thanks anyway,
David.

Oh! is that it?…have you abandoned the machine at this early stage or do you really want to get to the bottom of its problem I wonder?

No I definitely want to get to the bottom of the problem! Have you any other ideas?

OK, just ran another cycle – it looks to me as though the machine switches itself off when it gets to the drying phase. This is why there is water left – it never gets to the final drain. Any ideas why it’s doing this?
Thanks, David.

I think we’ve drawn a blank on this as far as “remote diagnosis” goes David. Engineer time to be honest 😉

Your postcode please (1st part) and I’ll check a list I have here for you 😀

Next question then is, if at the point it stops you were to ‘reset’ the machine, does the drain pump operate normally and discharge all the remaining water from the machine in say, less than 30 seconds?

Yes it does, but I am unable to reset it until the lights come back on. During this time it appears as though it has completely lost power.
On the last cycle I noticed it stopped during the wash cycle too. I opened the door and sure enough all the indicator lights had gone out. I left the door open and about half an hour later the indicator light for the cycle I was running came back on. I shut the door and it continued washing. Then it did the same during the dry cycle. Again I left the door open and about half an hour later the light came back on. This time I reset the machine, closed it up and it drained the remaining water in under 30 seconds.
P.S. – Dave, my postcode area is GU10. Thanks, David.

It sounds like the power supply on the computer board is on its way out. Due to the expense of the component, I would definitely get this checked by an engineer.

Its the bloody wall socket I reckon guys 💡
Bad contact on the pins making the thing go off, cools down, power resumes. (Programme will re-establish itself after power off anyway)….Yep….take a very close look at the wall socket my friend, that’s your problem…fingers crossed 🙄

Good one Martin – I bet the plug’s melted into the bitumen lagging on the back! Opening the door wiggles the machine and re-establishes contact.

Looks like you may well be right! I just wiggled the wire going into the socket and the power came back on (it’s mounted in the adjacent cupboard and backs onto the dishwasher). I’ll try and take a closer look tomorrow after work and let you know what I find.
Thanks for all the help,
David.

Ah, maybe I was a little hasty. It just went off again. This time I have tried plugging it into another socket via an extension lead but it is still dead. I also notice that if I toggle the on/off button on the door I get a thunk sound (from the pipes perhaps?) which indicates that maybe power is getting to the machine, though the lights remain out. Maybe the bad connection is inside the machine somewhere?

On/off switch or dry joints on the control PCB methinks 😉
Dave.
