Have got a problem with our Whirlpool dishwasher.

When it’s in rinse or wash mode, there’s a loud and rhythmic ticking noise, almost as though a motor is stuck.

It’s definitely not the discharge pump, as I’ve checked that.

I also don’t think it’s the main water pump, as I’ve taken the inspection panel off, and when I put my hand on the pump (that’s after the heater) I don’t feel the vibration, so I don’t think it’s coming from there.

I suspect it’s another motor or pump that close to the discharge pump, but as the dishwasher is still in-situ, I can’t see what’s what.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what it could be, before I have to remove the whole machine?

I’m just thinking about ordering the part, so I can do the whole lot in one go.

Any help would be much appreciated.

try jamming each of the wash bars in turn and see if it stops

Nope. It doesn’t. I already tried that.

Probably once every second, or maybe quicker. It’s pretty rhythmic, and sounds like a motor is spinning, but whatever it’s supposed to turning has jammed.

well it cant be a motor it would be a lot faster

its about what i expect if a bar is knocking something but you say thats not it

absolutely not a bar knocking as I removed both trays and bars etc and the ticking is coming from right underneath the machine

there is a diverter valve under the bottom bar with a small motor. never had one make a noise

Good stuff. Thanks Dave. I’m going to take it out and see if I can see where it’s coming from. I know the rough area.

Someone like you would probably nail it straight away when you heard the noise!

What does the diverter valve do (apart from divert)! 😀

diverts the water flow between the 2 bars. Allows more flow and force to be put through one bar and it alternates between the 2. there is a plastic disk you can often see by removing the lower bar and looking down the inlet. This has a hole in it and it revolves allowing more or less water to go to each bar

I took those screws out because I thought it might be coming from around that area. I removed the plastic bits and underneath there’s a plastic disc with a hole and a large o-ring. I tried turning the shaft, but it’s absolutely solid, which made me think something’s jammed.

    Any other suggestions?

its not jammed but it only goes round slowly so its got a lot of gears

unless it has jammed and the clicking is gear teeth slipping

there is no reasoni can think of why you cannot remove the disc as a check. as long as the shaft is still there it cant leak

That’s gotta be what it is.The sound really resembles gears jumping off a pinion or something like that.

So, I’m guessing that if I remove the machine and turn it on its side, I can get to the diverter valve?

Is it 240v so I can shove some power through it to see what happens while it’s off the machine?

as far as i know its a 240v synchronous motor. It will say on it somewhere
