KeymasterFridge is about 5 years old. Ice builds up on the cooling plate.
Not sure if the fridge is defrosting itself but when I over-ride by turning the thermostat to zero, the ice melts and fills the bottom of the fridge.
I checked the drain hole and it is definitely clear. The water seems to drip off the cooling plate directly onto the floor of the fridge, completely missing the drain channel.
Not sure what to do….

How much ice is forming on the evaporator there should only be a very thin layer if it is thick is it freezing any of the food? Poss. stat problem is the door closing correctly check seal or if above is ok then could be a poor pumping compressor

ParticipantHard to say if the ice is thick or not. 1mm layer I suppose but that’s because I force the fridge to defrost every few days. Haven’t noticed any of the food frozen.
I don’t understand why the melted ice would drip off the plate and miss the drain hole.
In normal operation, how often would you expect the thermostat to defrost any ice off the cooling plate ?

The fridge defrosts every time the thermostat cycles if you have to defrost yourself sounds like compressor faulty time to call a engineer to check Repairs@

ParticipantCompressor, but not thermostat ? I defrost it myself by turning the thermostat to zero. Since the fridge seems to be cold, I was thinking thermostat. If the compressor was faulty, wouldn’t it struggle to get cold ?

If the thermostat was not turning off then it would start to freeze the food in the fridge on a poor pumping compressor ice would form but the ice is not cold enough to cycle the stat

ParticipantAny thoughts on why the water isn’t draining into the drain hole ?
Slower pumping compressor causes more ice ? I would have thought the opposite that slower pumping compressor would not get the fridge cold enough…

Very hard to diagnose without seeing your appliance but ice will form thicker and when you turn off your fridge it will miss the defrost channel another question the ice on the evaporator is it soft to touch or hard. Have you checked the door seal?

ParticipantDoor seal seems OK except for maybe 10mm open at the bottom corner on the opening side. Is that enough to be causing all of this ?
The instructions talk about setting the “thermostat” at different levles depending on ambient temp. Is it really a thermostat or a timer that just runs the compressor for different lengths of time ?

ParticipantThe ice is soft. What could that mean ?
June 8, 2005 at 6:27 pm #137734litlor
ParticipantIts your door seal at fault your thermostat can be in any position if the evaporator is clogged with ice it wont make any difference

ParticipantAs I said yesterday Very hard to diagnose with out seeing your appliance if there is a gap in your door seal the door seal is not sealing properly best to call in the professionals my friend get it checked out, get a price to repair then make a decision on what to do go to Repairs@ and put in your postcode

ParticipantWhen I turn the thermostat dial up and down, should I hear it trying to click on and off, like a normal thermstat ?

If it’s an APM6217 which is a larder fridge then no, it won’t react to turning it up and down.
It allows a certain amount of time for the defrost of the evaporator to take place after cutting out 😉
