we need to work out what the connections do to work things out
start with the simple ones. on the new ring 3 and 4 are the end of the inner and outer elements
which on the old ring looks like 1 and 3. so if as you say you connect 3 to 3 and 1 to 4 the only thing that can go wrong is inner and outer elements will be swopped
the current link between 1a and 2 has been replaced by the yellow link.
that leaves us with 3 wires
one wire is the live feed to the ring
the other 2 are the hot indicator lamp
take your multimeter and measure continuity between the 2 reds. if yes then the green terminal comes from the simmerstat load output to power the ring. do a similar test on the old ring see which connection give you 0 ohms between the link wire and 1 of the other terminals. which ever one that is is the live feed to the ring. remove wires before testing in case of back feeds.
the last 2 wires are only a sw for the lamp and it should not matter which way they go
