We’ve seen this before, first hand in a small way, where a supposed long warranty that sounds great when you buy a product turns out to be not so great.

In this instance a chap in America with a Maytag washing machine, that came with a ten year warranty discovers that before the warranty expired that the parts which failed were obsolete and not longer being produced.

We’ve seen the same kind of thing happening here as well.

He posted this on TikTok:

And here’s the question that you need to ask, if companies such as Maytag who are owned by Whirlpool are unable or unwilling to honour their own warranty or, uanable to service it (it doesn’t matter why) then what use was the long warranty in the first place?

We often see “limited” warranties on stuff like motors and such, basicallly parts that are unlikley to fail but, to stop having them availabe before the warranty si even up is, a bit rough. What’s worse is, we presume the terms of the warranty allow the brand to get out of paying up for a replacement machine or making some sort of concession to a new one.

Although mooted as being planned obsolescence we’d not jumo to that conclusion, it’s more likely something stupid such as, there’s not been enough use of the parts to make it worth making them.

We’d not base what you choose to buy on the warranty that’s offered due to this kind of thing as it won’t save you from what we’ve seen.
