Washer/dryer and refrigerator/freezer “” A repair person generally has to view the machine to diagnose the problem. Many repair services will reduce fees if you haul the machines in yourself instead of requesting a house call. In the metro area, the service fee for having a repair person visit your home ranges from $35-$50; some repair services will credit some of that fee to your bill if you opt to have the appliance repaired.

Ron Sawyer, executive director of the Professional Service Association, repair shop trade group in Albany, N.Y., said in some cases, a 15- or 20-year-old household appliance is better made than brand new low-end models and may be worth repairing rather than replacing.

    What! I disagree. This should really read: a 15 to 20 year old household appliance is better made than a brand new machine whether it be a low end brand OR a high end brand and maybe worth repairing rather than replacing!
    Come across a fair number of higher end brands that are no better or even more unreliable than cheaper stuff.Oh the stuff of lusty ivory towers are made from!
