ParticipantI’ve just discovered a brilliant website; http://www.saynoto0870.com . It gives you ordinary geographical number equivalents for 0870 numbers. For example, for Merloni spares you can dial 01733 568989 [& hold for the operator] instead of 08709 077077. 😀 😀
I’ve tried adding a few myself; some have gone in; some haven’t. Ones that haven’t are BSH Appliance Care;
Spares: 01908 328600 & ask for Spares
Service: 0208 569 0080Caremark Spares; 01942 840840 & ask for spares.
These will save a lot of money for anybody [like me] on a fixed monthly phone tariff for ordinary numbers, i.e. effectively ‘free’ phone calls.
Perhaps we could start a forum for these numbers related to our trade as people find them out.
Any ideas anybody?

KeymasterYeah, we’ll sell you the DVD…
Charge you for calling us…
Then charge you exhorbitant prices for spares…

Connect, Electrue etc -0870 4423 700 is 0121 766 2212
Stoves (all Glen Dimplex products) 0870 444 9929 use – 0151 432 7838

For Electrue i do – 01217 666222 – That gets you through to the phone monkey’s.
The most useful number is technical enquires (which is why i’m never asking in that forum) – 01217 6622055
And customer services – 01217 662210

Nice one Geoff!
Another case of the internet returning a little bit of power back into the hands of the people.
The reason that firms get away with things like this is that they know that we are all individuals (divided we fall).
Many do not even know how much these calls can cost.
If we all send an email to each of our friends / relatives to publicise this site and they do the same and add their numbers then 0870 might just die eventually. What a good 💡

No, I know but it will be changed to a proper 0845 number at the earliest possible opportunity. Plus, we don’t make any money on that, it only pays for the service, there was no alternative at the time. 🙁

UKW is an example of a legitimate use of an 0870 number as it’s offering a free advice service to the public and trade and run by volunteers.
Electrue making it’s account customers use one when phoning up to place orders is just sheer greed. Actually I didn’t realise that they’d changed over to 0870 numbers till I read these replies as I’ve always had the ordinary ones programmed into my phone.May 18, 2005 at 10:44 pm #135103andy2

Don’t think anybody was having a go at UKWG Ken even if it did make something off it – like Roly16 says the service is free anyway. 🙂
But virtually every business that you phone nowadays has one of these numbers and usually after you have got past the interminable menu system they keep you waiting in a queue for ages. 😥
When you consider that 0870 numbers can be charged up to 10p / min somebody is making a lot of easy cash, dear me you can call Australia nowadays for 3p / min through a firm like First number.
What I cannot understand is how it is possible for them to do this without giving prior warning to the caller of the cost, as they have to do with other numbers. eg. TV quizes etc.

No Andy, I know that no-one is having a go, I just like to be as open and honest about stuff as I can be as well as offering an explanation for what we do.
The 0870 number actually, right now, routes to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone and, soon enough, that will move to a pukka land line. When that happens it will become an 0845 number as for the vast majority of telephone users, that’s a good thing. But sadly, with the current arrangement, there was no alternative to anything bar an 0870 number, but I will sort that ASAP.
Even to offer the advice and help that we do, I can see little or no reason to penilise you guys or the public to get that… cue Del (among others) going nuts again for me not charging. 😉

May be a bit late on this topic but just doing some catching up and the one that bugged me was if you found something wrong with connects dvd they give you a number to phone – 0871 2223103 at 25p per minute. I thought it was nice of them to charge us for letting them know they had made a mistake????????? 👿
However 0121 753 0079 gets you to the same place only cheaper! 😀

KeymasterJust to have Del freaking out again… 😆
You’ll note that you can now call the UKW office for the cost of a local call as the new number is 0845 226 1272. The direct dial number is still readily available and published at the foot of the page as well.

Are these people brain dead? Would you as a business treat your customers in this manner knowing that your livelihood depends upon them.
I wonder how long a supplier would last if the united independant engineers of the world were to boycott those who abused them in this way.
Not that I am suggesting such a thing could happen of course 😉
Power to the people!!

Thankyou Roly for starting this! After 35 mins on hold with BT, I finally get through to try to sort out my quiery…… Only to be given a different number to ring for home deliveries 👿 Yes, it was an 0870! I were on hold for 15 mins and remembered that I saw this post, so hung up, went to the site, input the number…. and there we have it….. a local number! Dialled that, got through within 5 or 6 rings, quiery dealt with straight away 😀 !
The site is now in my fav’s!!!!!
