ParticipantReading a copy of a friends Which? Magazine recently it stated that all washing machines produced after December 2013 had to have a 20 degree cycle. Anyone heard any more on this?

I didn’t think any manufacturer was ever obliged to install or remove any feature from their products other than for EC safety legislation. So how would or could they insist on a 20 degree compulsory option?

If the tree hugging, liberal ‘climate change’ loonies can convince governments that wind farms actually save money and are eco friendly when they most certainly are not then anything is possible. :rolls: 😥

You know what’s really dumb about this?
The EU or whoever wants to force washing machine manufacturers to do something like this then that’s fine, they pass it into law and all have to do it. Doesn’t mean to say it has to actually work, just that it is there. After all, who’s going to enforce it does, the Washing Machine Police?
Flipside is, where’s the statute forcing detergent manufacturers to ensure that their products will work using that particular program, whatever it is. And, will they force all the own label detergents to go down that road as well from all the big supermarket chains all across Europe?
Then, what about the clothing manufacturers, are they also to make their clothing suitable to be washed in low temperatures?
But then, you can’t legislate that dirt will obey EU law over the laws of physics and chemistry and do as it is instructed at a lower temperature.
In other words, it’s a stupid, stupid idea.
It is so because people will go get one of these machines, use the 20?C wash, get poor results and do one of two things, complain bitterly that the machine isn’t working as advertised (when it is) or, they will simply rewash completely negating the “environmental benefit” and really in fact adding to the problem. Or, they just toss the clothing out earlier than it should be, same effect as previous.
They’ve done it with the whole 40?C or less thing, why would this be any different?
That’s the problem with stuff like this, the consequences are rarely considered as it seems to me that people more than a step or two removed from the coal face often have no clue what actually goes on there. They do not understand that consumers will more often than not, fail to act in the manner that they assume.

It’d be through the edo-design legislation, Martin, that has, among other things, already seen the demise of less efficient fridges and, I have a feeling, American top loaders.
