    A knock is heard when drum changes direction; everything seems to be OK. Could it be the capacitor?

    cap wont cause this
    check the fans are not coming loose on the motor

    All became clear when I took the side panel off. The spring holding down the motor had come off and the drive belt had come off the grooved section of its spindle, goodness knows why. Took the opportinity to replace the belt (5 years wear) just as one would replace a cambelt on a car at 70K miles. All OK now.
