When your appliance breaks down or fails then all that the average punter requires is for it to be repaired ASAP and rightly so, on most occasions they call in an engineer as most people are not capable of repairing their own.

Now if you speak to any engineer they will all have instances where they have turned up at a household to find that everyone one in the house has a bad case of some nasty cold, flu, gastric problems etc.
They are not fit to be at work but seem to have no consideration for the poor engineer who has just walked into the house; the only thing important to them is to get the appliance fixed.

Here I sit with nothing else to do with my workload building up because I am a one-man band and that I have now contracted “Chicken Pox” from a household that I recently visited. I had been working there for half an hour before a child walked past me with the dreaded disease.

Now then here’s the crunch, the disease does not show itself for a few days and apparently it is very contagious for up to a week before the “spots” arrive. In that time I have visited countless households where women are pregnant, the elderly are weak, but the worst case which has upset me the most is a household where they have an extremely poorly baby, I have recently found that the child is now in hospital with severe complications

Please have a little consideration for us poor engineers.

Also please try not to take your vaccum cleaner to the local repair shop if anyone in the household has this sort of illness, it happened a few year ago with my colleague, he repaired one and caught the same ( chicken pox ) upon returning to collect she actually brought in the child that had the problem with her, then my colleague knew were he had got it from. 😉

perhaps the Swine- ‘flu outbreak will concentrate peoples’ minds a bit.

You, also can do your bit. ASK, when booking a service-call….”does anyone have colds, flu, or any contagious disease or illness? Have you or your household had contact? “

I know that sounds a little paranoid, but if you explain that you visit (say) 10 homes a day and would hate to BRING an infection, just as much as you would hate to take one with you,- you can use this to show that you take CUSTOMER-CARE seriously.

I haven’t thought about it for years, bet you hadn’t until recently, either!
It’s a very real threat to the self-employed, even though we usually work come hell or high water.

That’s it then lads, before we book a call we must give our customers the ‘over the phone questionnaire’ just to be safe:-

    “does anyone have……………list contagious diseases………….
” has any in your household recently returned from Mexico, Texas, Burkino Fasso, Nigeria……..?”
    “does anyone smoke…..is a registered peadophile…got an ASBO…or under medication for depression/skitzophenia …..?”

Courses in self defence, first aid and pshycoanalysis must be passed and of course full protective clothing and breathing apparatus taken on every call without exception.

(forgive spelling errors, cannot be fagged to wrestle with the spell checker right now as I’m running a temperature of 104 and got this rash from some snotty little ankle biter, caught earlier today I shouldn’t wonder)

    Mind how you go!

Funnily enough I’m very rarely ill – I think it’s because I do this job that my Immune system must be “well ‘ard”. 😛
