ParticipantHi all, I’m new on here & we have a problem with our Beko washing machine WM5120W.
On Saturday when a 2nd wash was finishing we heard a racket coming from the m/c. As the cycle was coming to an end I stopped the m/c & removed the clothes. I turned it off at the wall switch & tried to remove the drainage cap, as I know from other w/ms that small pieces can become trapped & cause a row, but I couldn’t turn it more than a 1/4 turn. Besides the tube had not been fixed properly from the factory (this was the first time I’d opened it in the 2 & 1/2 years we have had it), so I fought with it for a couple of mins – to no avail!
I pulled out the m/c & tipped it back far enough to get at tube from the inside. I did this gently, once it was safely leaned back I took out the screws that held the tube in place & managed to get a better grip. I managed to unscrew it with difficulty & pulled out a couple of hair clips & a piece of wire. I put it all back together again & put the holding bracket in its correct place. I put the cover back on & put the outlet pipe into a bucket to pump water through it before putting the m/c back in its place.
I put the m/c on the usual washing programme my wife uses & the water started to enter the m/c, a few seconds later it stopped! ❓ I waited a minute or two to see what would happen but nothing did! ❓ I pressed the cancel button for the 3 seconds, again nothing happened! ❓ I turned the m/c off & on & tried the programme once again – the same as before happened: the water started to enter the m/c & a few seconds later it stopped! I repeated all a third time with identical results! 😡
I took out the drainage plug again & looked to see if any wires were loose – there were no wires attached to the tube. I didn’t expect there to be either. I put it all together again & tried to start the programme – again nothing but the entrance of water for a couple of seconds & that was that!
Not knowing what else to do I put the m/c back in its place. On Monday we looked for a repairs company online & found one that seemed reasonable. They rang me within in a few minutes of filling in & sending off the form on their webpage. I explained the problem & they said they could send an engineer the next day. I was asked if I preferred an a.m or p.m appointment, I chose a.m, they said he would come between 8a.m & 1p.m. Then I was asked for my card details which I gave them. They gave me a works number which I wrote down.
The engineer arrived at 1.45pm. I explained our problem & he tried – unsuccessfully different setting & got the same results as I got – water entering for a few seconds then nothing! He tried opening the door which surprised me as all w/m nowadays have a child lock so the door can’t be opened for a couple of minutes after it has stopped. I told him this & yet he still tried at least twice more to open the door within in a second or two of the machine being turned off. 😯 He then said it was the fault of the PCB that was “shot”!He said we would have to have a new one fitted. I asked him how much that would set us back but he only answered with evasives saying HQ would tell me. I wasn’t very happy but signed the receipt anyway.
I’m sorry for being so long winded but do you think he is right? He doesn’t surely an engineer would know about the door lock!
None of the setting or buttons work on the m/c. I’ve tried several more times but get the same result. I tried again this evening but now not even the water will enter! 😡
They have informed us they have the PCB but that it would cost us £61.78 + VAT! Then we also would have to pay a delivery charge of £12
No more charges after that they assured me. They had already taken nearly £90 just for the engineer’s visit, now they want another nearly £90!
We have ordered the PCB online from Ebay & I will try to fix it myself & hope that’s the end of the story!

As your anonymity is assured on here may I ask what company this was? 0800repair or Repaircare maybe?

Thank you, Martin for replying. The company in question is The Service Group.
We ordered the PCB on Ebay but we have received an email saying they don’t have the piece in stock after all.So we have begun a search for other places & have found some places that seem genuine for example : http://www.beko-spares.co.uk/products/product/?p=7889&highlight=WM5120W
The problem is that although I go through their checks to make sure its the right piece the photos don’t seem to correspond with our m/c. 😕
Can you help? Could I perhaps upload a photo of our PCB so that it might be of greater help?

All websites, including this one, show the same PCB for your model. So I guess it must be the right one. What happens when you buy it then fit it and it doesn’t cure the problem? PCB’s are not returnable, once the sealed box is broken you’re stuck with it!
Two better options: Get those guys back to sort it. I they bugger up the PCB or it still doesn’t cure them it’s their lookout. OR, bin the machine and buy a Bosch. 😀

Hi Martin,
Reading through some of the articles I wonder if it is something to do with the drainage filter that I removed & replaced – twice! Would that prevent the m/c from filling up with water after just a few seconds? Would that be the reason it won’t empty? If that’s the case, what can I do about it?July 18, 2014 at 5:05 pm #416804Davy123
ParticipantRe: A problem with w/m Beko WM5120W
Could I have caused something to go wrong when I tilted the m/c back to get at the filter? I found a piece of transparent red plastic when I put the m/c back but have no idea where it came from or if it did anything! Looking down from the top of the m/c to the drainage pipe I see there is some more of it against the front wall of the m/c. Can’t see what it is for/doing, etc. The piece that fell out has no holes for fixing & no apparent way of being fixed to the m/c. This has been the first time I’ve moved it in the 2 & 1/2 years it’s been in the kitchen.

If the machine was working fine up to the point where you tipped it back to access the pump, and filter. And then would no longer perform afterwards, the logical conclusion would be that something happened during that process to cause it.
The most obvious would be the possibility of water spillage onto exposed electrical equipment. The most vulnerable being the main motor. Any water spill on that would cause an electrical short and directly effect the main PCB.
Did your RCD trip at the point when you tested it having successfully removed the pump blockages?
Did the engineer not question you in that regard, pull it out and take a closer look. Or just stand at the front pulling at the door lock before proclaiming the PCB faulty?

I can’t see how it could be due to water spillage as the m/c powered back on with no problems – every time after being turned on & switched off – be it through the on/off button on the m/c or from the mains switch. Wouldn’t spillage have caused an immediate blow out of the fuses?
He did little more than try different programmes & drain out. Water entered for a few seconds then stopped & nothing more happened. The cancel operation didn’t work nor did any other commands – except on/off! Oh & the door lock!

Hence why I asked the question, thanks. 😀

Thought so, typical muppet ‘engineer’ John Cleese would be proud of. Cop the 90 quid get you to sign his job docket and away…..!
So, we are no further and I refer you instead to my earlier posts for you to make your mind up over where to proceed with this. 🙁
Meanwhile I will try to find out about “The Service Group” but so far I’ve drawn a blank. Suspect they must be local to wherever you live, as they don’t show around my neck of the woods (Hampshire)

Thanks once again, Martin.
Just a moment ago I replied to their email telling me the piece was ready (PCB)telling them we were no longer interested as we had found the same piece elsewhere much cheaper!
I looked at the email address before sending the reply & it is directed to The Repair Company!
The Service Group is based at Finance House, 20/21 Aviation Way London Southend Airport Essex SS2 6U according to the address on the receipt I was given by the engineer.
Above the line where I had to sign there is their website address: therepaircompany.biz. As I wasn’t wearing my reading glasses I was unable to read the small print when I signed on the line!
My wife would rather we buy a new m/c rather than attempting to make the repairs at home. I looked at rental options but again my wife would much prefer to buy a new one.
As we are both pensioners we have a very limited budget & can’t afford to buy a “top-of-the-market m/c”. If anybody knows of a decent washing machine that should last a good few years on 2 washes average a week I’d be very grateful if you could let us know.

I have read comments on this Beko washing machine in older posts on this forum – they weren’t exactly full of praise for the m/c!
Yet my wife & I agree that it has served us well the 2 & 1/2 years we have had it! We feel it has been unjustly denigrated. We have done an average of 2 washes per week & we have never had a problem till last Saturday as I describe – rather extensively I must admit!
I would like to have another go before sending it away to be recycled but I don’t know what I can do! Any advice would be very welcome!

I appreciate you giving me this information. In fact they are part of the Servicenet Group, a company much discussed and criticised within our trade forums. A useful read about them for you is HERE
I would concur with my colleague that checking out the motor, especially the carbon brushes, would be worth doing. Given your circumstances it is worth a closer look. Clearly the Servicenet ‘engineer’ didn’t even bother pulling it out and taking the back off so further investigation wouldn’t do any harm. Though please remember to fully disconnect the machine from the mains first. :zap:
Let us know how you get on. 😀

Thanks Martin – but where do I find the carbon brushes & how do I get at them? I’m a complete dunce when it comes to mechanical & electrical things!
Thanks for the warning as I read something about the capcitator holding a charge for sometime after switching off, how do I avoid falling foul of it? I imagine there’s no problem at the moment as the m/c has been switched off for a few days.

Oh dear, you may struggle with this job then.
We’re talking about brushes that are attached to the motor. So you’ll need to check that out.
Davy123 wrote:Thanks for the warning as I read something about the capcitator holding a charge for sometime after switching off,
No such device fitted to your humble Beko so no need for caution other than unplugging it that is.
Please understand that we cannot give step by step, blow by blow instructions. We have to assume those asking for help have a fair electro/mechanical knowledge in order to DIY. Your admission is a caution I must say.
All the best! 😀
