WTFAYLPA………? And another attempt at the reasoned debate about public posting goes down the swanee…..
FFS – Martin IS concerned about what we are doing, we should at least give him the courtesy of a sensible discussion.
Might not be tomorrow though… The provincial town of Reading has not only held the mighty Reds to a money spinning replay with their reserves, but Michael Sprott, a boxer in the blue and white stripey shorts, just flattened Audley Harrison…….

Oh! – it was, wasn’t it…… Sorry chaps. I’d just like to thank my wife, my family, NTL and a trusty, somewhat battered Toshiba Tecra 8200 for making this all possible…… And you guys, of course.
😀

Top marks to Chris on that
The rest of you are on a charge of insubordination and are confined to barracks this weekend! 😈

Rules? Maybe not Dave. Guidelines? Yes please, why not? After all the Advisory Council has notched up a few and is very insistent on applying them. Why should’nt Moderators at least decide amongst themselves a basic set of guidelines we all should follow?
In this specific case (see Rule 5 -“Advice in Public Forums”) the identification of components, “We CANNOT identify the exact location……..” has been countermanded surely?
We have to be seen to be able to apply our own rules (guidelines if you insist) and stick to them don’t you think?
At ease gentlemen….. 😉
I’m off into Reading town centre now to revel in the glory of our recent triumphs….

Hi
You are absolutely right Martin. If we set out rules for advising public, then hell, we have to stick by them surely (don’t call me Shirley)
If we don’t we may aswell remove them and have anarchy. We can’t have one rule for one or it will just looks un professional and hypocritical.I say review the “guidlines” in public forum and then adhere to them rigidly.
Ok thats me done, ducking back down to barracks before Martin spots me AWOL 😆Greg

I don’t get this at all, sorry. :conf:
The guidelines are there, seem simple enough to me, so what’s the problem?
We offer advice without giving a blow-by-blow description of how to do it, if the person doesn’t understand, “you have to remove the pump” (example) then we can’t help them. That way you get a feel for how much they actually can do whilst not giving much up to the next person that reads if they get that far. Where it gets to a case of them asking, “just how do I do that” is the point at which you tell them that they need pro help.
I don’t see where the issue is.
As Dave rightly points out, each one is taken on its own merit which is what Dave and I have done from the very start. Some people are capable, most aren’t and we have to say that without actually saying that.

I treat them all on there own merit and advise accordingly, however, this is not a one to one forum so the advice has to surely adhere to the “guidlines” because any Tom, Dick or Harry may read it aswell, whom may not have the abilities of the original poster. 😕
Just an input ayway 🙂Greg

Nope if you think about this…
To say to someone “remove the door, mind the clips that can break”
Is totally different to…
“Remove the door panel by undoing the five screws at each side allowing the front to swing door after you release the three clips at the top.”
one assumes a certain amount of know-how or common sense, the latter is a blow-by-blow. The latter is not acceptable in public IMO although this is a very mild example.
However, blow-by-blow accounts are allowed fro things that are in the instruction manual, or should be, as they are customer serviceable items. Such as removing an oven door for cleaning, but then you could argue that that makes changing the hinges a breeze as well.
In short there’s no easy answers and it comes down to our own common sense over what is or is not acceptable. Detailing some sort of rules or guidelines beyond what has already been discussed many, many times is, frankly, a waste of time and energy.

I will carry on as per then, which is the same principal as Daves. It seems to work and is tried and tested 😀
