ParticipantHi, can anyone give me some advice? My Admiral side by side fridge was not cooling/freezing, so i called out an engineer who told me that the compressor had failed. He quoted me £800 parts and labour, but it seems very pricy? I read that Maytag recalled some fridges because the compressor relays were faulty causing the compressor to lock up. Could this be the case, because it must be cheaper to replace the relay than the whole compressor?
The fridge is only three years old and two years ago we had the jazz board replaced for £200. So should i cough up another lump of cash, or look to buy a new fridge? The Admiral is fully clad stainless, so a new similar model would cost over £2000. I was told that Maytag were one of the best makes, but this doesn’t seem to be the case.
Thanks.May 27, 2011 at 8:37 am #352291kwatt

£800 seems just a tad excessive. £2-350 would be more like it I would have thought.
If it’s one of the actual older proper Maytag units, yes it is good. If it’s one of the newer Whirlpool clones then it’s not so brilliant.

Thanks for the info. I think i’ll try and get some more quotes. The fridge was manufactured in June 2006, so hopefully it is more maytag than whirlpool.

Hi,I am an Whirlpool/Maytag approved gas engineer & Maytag quote £585 inc vat for a compressor change.
However they also cover refrigeration components ie compressor evaporator & condenser for 5yrs so depending on your purchase date might mean you only have to pay the service charge
If the relay is faulty it will have obvious signs of burning on the underside looking at it in situMay 27, 2011 at 8:29 pm #352294ELDAR59

hello bassy, where are you based in the uk? i’m sure someone from this board would be able to repair the fridge for less than that.
the 5 years cover wasn’t a blanket thing if i remember correctly and i’m sure it was only on the maytag and amana brands, not the admiral.
as ken said earlier, if its a maytag manufactured (and with your manufactured date i think it will be)then it’s a good quality appliance and worth keeping hold of. -
