Admiral GS2126PEDW/19 Fridge/Freezer . . .Fridge Problem

I have an Admiral GS2126 side by side fridge freezer, recently acquired, 2nd user.
The freezer is fine but the fridge keeps warming up, i’ve done a bit of internet research and the common problem with these appears to be the auto defrost not working and the coils at the back of the freezer icing up.
This appears to be the case here. It will run fine for a week or so then, panel off, hairdryer out, defrost the coils and its fine again for a week or so.
What is likely to be the problem? i’ve found an american site with parts diagrams and this model doesn’t seem to have the auto defrost control board that causes a problem for some models.
How can i identify the faulty component? I am an electrician so i have access to test equipment.
One of the diagrams shows a resistance value across the thermostat but the terminals are well insulated so i can’t see how to actually test it. I don’t want to cause any damage!

Hi

The problem will be the defrost heater which has failed.They are ceramic tubes one in the middle and one at the bottom the are supplied as a pair,Easily changed.

not this one bryan.
this is the single metallic element, at the bottom of the evaporator.

Any ideas what the most likely fault is anyone?…………….. and where can i order parts from once i figure out what’s wrong?

the fault will most likely be defrost heater, as mentioned above.
i’m sure the part will be available from either the shop on this site, or maytag themselves.
maytag have just moved to croydon, but a google search should bring up their contact details.
i’d put a meter across the heater first, just to be certain.

does the fan run? the fan at the top of the evaporator in the freezer section?

Many thanks, i mis read the post above and thought you were disagreeing that the heater was the most likely fault. i’ll stick my meter across it and check it first. i’ll have a look at the fan too. should it run constantly?

the fan should run when the compressor is on, there’s not a delay on this model.
just trying to cover all angles. it’s not likely to be the fan, as you say that the fridge will work once you’ve defrosted it.

at room temp, if the thermostat is in series with the heater, you should get approx 240k ohms. if you can measure ‘after’ the stat, then considerably less, although it will probably be o/c, if there’s a problem with heater.

Many thanks, the fan is running fine and i get an open circuit when reading across the heater/thermostat.
I can’t find the part listed but a google search turns up quite a few US based companies selling it.
I assume these fridges are converted from 110v to 230v for UK use by means of a transformer so a US sourced part should work ok. Is that a correct assumption or am i better to keep searching for a UK supply?

it should just be a straight forward 240v appliance.
you’ll be able to source one in this country. if no-one on this board has one, try bradshaws…….

Just had a similar problem with my unit.
Do not assume that it is the element, it could be the timer at fault. The timer kicks in every 24 hours or so and then activates the defrost element.
To test that the physical side of the timer is working, you can carry out a manual check.
Remove it and with a slotted screwdriverturn the mechanism [in the obvious place untill slot lined up with the pre marked line [it should click to activate circuit /to turn on heater]
now set the unit just befor it clicks on and refit unit and power back on. The fan should be running untill the timer once again clicks [you may have to wait a few mins] then the fan turns off and the heater turns on [you will see it melting the ice.
This proves the timer is o.k
if meter tests show that the element is o.k then the problem is with a faulty thermostat [attached to heater] very rarely there is a intermittent fault here[although it has happened twice with me !
