Fridge freezer is 18 months old.
Periodically the milk in the fridge started to freeze with the fridge on setting 2 (7 is coldest) turning the ice maker off for a short period seemed to resolve the issue for a few months.

The last week it has become a constant issue, affecting other food. On looking further I discovered that the vent at the rear of the fridge was constantly pumping out cold air and looking further I saw a small spring lodged in the vent. I have re-positioned the spring into the flap (behind the vent) it seemed to have dislodged itself from and whilst it seems to have improved food is still frozen. Cold air is no longer being pumped out constantly.

Today the water stopped dispensing and it appears that the filter in the fridge compartment is frozen. I can’t even turn it and their is a smal amount of ice around the neck.

I have vacumed the compression coil under the unit, they weren’t particularly clogged up) and reduced the temp to setting one. I have also closed two small vents at the front of the fridge.

Any ideas what the problem is and how to resolve?

Setting 1 is the coldest setting. It should be at 3-4. It seems that the air vent is not shutting allowing the air to continue through to the fridge.

this is normally at the top left corner behind the panel ass.

you’re absolutely right theendisnye, 7 is the coldest setting.
the fridge gets it’s cold air from the freezer, through 4 vents.
the bottom 3 you have manual control over, but the top one in the top left hand corner of the fridge is controlled electronically.
this consists of a motorised damper which is spring loaded.
the spring can come away from the assembly, which will have to be fully dis-assembled in order to fit it back correctly.
if you have refitted this spring correctly, then the problem could lie with the motorised damper itself.
you’ll either need a new one (part no 67006251) or a heater mod kit.
it sounds really, like it’s engineer time.
try the repairs @ feature on this site.

Many thanks for the replies. I have re-looked at the spring and found it was again disconnected. So I have tried to put it back and will leave the cover off to monitor for a while. The spring seems to clip back ok but came dislodged very quickly are there any instructions anywhere for how it should be placed? Steve

not really instructions steve, but in the past if i’ve had one that’s been troublesome, i’ve put a little blob of silicon sealant on the loose end of the spring.
this normally helps cure it.

Good advice, mine kept freezing up last year and found the daper was worn and bought a new damper from whirlpool £40.
Now 9 month on its at it again, this time freezing up and the spring popped off, will try the silicone but where can i get the Heater mod lit from Whirlpool wont sell it to me as they say it need to be done by a qualified engineer and wanted £225 to fit!!

this is probably due to the fact that the heater mod kit has to be wired into the lighting circuit in the fridge . . . have you tried speaking to Maytag? There are a couple of different types of heater kits depending on the damper thats fitted to your model. But they do come with very good fitting instructions with diagrams.
