Be aware that there is an advertising scam as follows: Caller rings up, asks to speak to a senior person, then says thank you for advertising in our childrens help magazine last October (or whatever / whenever) or local advertising magazine, we will send out the magazine to you with our invoice. They reel off your address, business name etc. Had two last week. My guess is that they are going through yellow pages. Clearly, for those larger organisations this is going to be a problem. When I challenged the two different callers they hung up!! 😈
Be careful out there 😉

I answer the phone at our HQ, so I have to deal with these calls all day, everyday! I’ve become so used to it, and I’ve become very expierimental with them. The trick is to make them hang up on you. My favourites are….
You: Hello?
Them: Hello, my name is Steeeeve (in a thick indian accent) can I speak to the manager there please.
You: Sure, what’s your account number?
Them: I’m sorry sir?
You: You do have an account number don’t you?
Them: ????
You: Well just give me your postcode and I’ll look it up.
The phone call breaks down pretty quickly!

You: Hello?Them: Hello, my name is Steeeeve (in a thick indian accent) can I speak to the manager there please.
You: What’s it about?
Them: Blah blah blah
You: Well first of all I’d like to tell you about the teachings of Jesus Christ…
This time the phone call breaks down very quickly!

You: Hello?Them: Hello, my name is Steeeeve (in a thick indian accent) can I speak to the manager there please.
You: Could I interest you in one of the lovely Bosch washing machines that I sell? (Dont let them answer) They’re a really nice machine! It’s A rated, comes with a two year guarantee……
The only problem is, when they then hang up on me, it makes me angrier that if I just hung you on them. But it’s worth it!
I have alot more if people are interested. 😉

I find that ignorance, my speciality, works wonders.
Them: “Hello, can I speak to…”
Me: “Sorry, I can’t hear you very well.”
“No, I still can’t make you out”
“Could you repeat that, please?” x 4
“No, you can’t speak to anyone else”
“Could you leave your number and I’ll try and get someone else to call you back later?”Craig

Dont get me wrong. They are normally the people that ring when im laid on my back, under a washer, and I’ve just got the two spanners on the motors bolts. Then they get a real screaming at, goatboy-style.
If you’ve got the patience, you can have fun with them, but don’t forget Brains’ original point, some of them are cunning! Well, afew are cunning. Most are stupid, overworked, stressed and poorly-paided.

Hit them with this reply if you have a mind to, and check their response:-
Option 1):
“It is unlawful under the “Telecommunications (Data Protection & Privacy) (Direct Marketing) Regulations 1998, for anyone to make a direct marketing call without first obtaining prior permission from the recipient!”…………..”Now can you please give me the name of who you wish to speak to, also tell me the name of the company you represent, your name and/or your staff number?”
Option 2):
“Thanks for calling, sorry we are not interested….Have a nice day!”

That’s very restrained of you, Martin. Personally I tend to invoke sex and travel….. 😀

I agree with Goatboy & Martins statements. But, like Goatboy, they seem to call when I have my head inside an electric oven trying to fix it & listening to a nagging customer 😆
The mobile phone rings, customer stops nagging whilst you are listening & you only have to give a hint of an agreement & you are truly done out of some money 😈 . I even had had one clown say they were recording the conversation for training purposes.
So, like Martin be careful, be cagey, be prepared. Ask them to to fax a signed copy of the advert etc.

We tell them; “We are registered with the telephone preferrence service”. We say, “We need to know your name, the number you are calling from and the name of your team leader, you are committing an offence and we will report you”.
Works every time.

My home phone is registered with TPS, which has reduced these calls, the problem is that a large number of these calls are now coming from abroad, the TPS can do nothing to stop them.
