ParticipantI have a Tricity Bendix WDR 1020 washer dryer bought new in late 1999 and used fairly consistently twice a week since then.
It stopped in mid cycle, after the wash and before the spin. I drained and emptied it and then experimented with different parts of a cycle. It seems to wash as normal, but whenever a spin or dry is selected there is a loud rattle, although it works. The drum rotates freely when spun by hand. There is generally a few seconds delay before the drum starts moving, but the rattle starts as soon as it is switched on to the spin or dry cycle.
The service helpline said it is probably the bearings, and a repair would cost £125+. The call out alone is £50. However, the helpline recommends dumping the machine without checking it and buying a new one, on the grounds that £300+ for a new machine is a better investment than (probably) £125 on a seven year old machine that may well develop some other fault in the next year or two.
1. Does is seem that the bearings is the problem?
2. Is a new machine (of whatever brand) a better bet?July 19, 2007 at 12:15 pm #221636Washman

Hi
It could be the drain pump thats noisy. is the drum quiet when turned by hand and is there any movement in the drum its self.

Hi,
The drum is quiet when turned by hand, and the drum seems to move as it should.

Anybody got any views on the second question in the original post (Is a new machine (of whatever brand) a better bet?)?

If the noise is there before the drum starts to turn, then I would say it’s very likely to be the drain pump worn. This is a very common fault and not expensive to fix.
Unplug machine first if going in.July 27, 2007 at 5:19 pm #221640TroyMcClure

Mike / Martin,
Thanks for the advice – it was the drain pump. Hopefully it will now struggle on for a few years!
