    Hi all..

We have an Indesit Model WG1033TPG washing machine which has given years of good service.

    The Type is NLB4684C

    S/N 006072169

Today when the machine was in use, the main ELCB flicked off. We reset it but unfortunately it kept recurring. we dont have a split consumer unit. Its an older consumer unit which has a main incomer ELCB and at some point, someone has replaced all the rewireable fuse cartridges with MCBs.

Anyway pulled washer out and noted a small amount of muddy dirty water type wetness on the tiled floor. It wasnt actually very wet which leads me to think there has been slight leakage but no significant.

Flipped machine around, took back off,,nothing immediately obvious.

Flipped over on its side to get a view from the bottom and noted that the motor connector block had traces of wetness.

The connector block is conveniently mounted onto the motor with a bracket and when the machine is vertical,it must be pretty close to vertically below the centreline of the drum!

A quick feel along the metal circlip revealed a slight feeling of wetness though again, not a lot.

I’m thinking its just cumulative, maybe stop start and its only become apparent due to it conveniently dropping the odd drip onto the motor power connector.

The big circlip has a couple of turns on it so nipped it up.

As a temp fix, removed the connector block from its mounting position and swung it out of the way and cable tied it securely..now all ok.

    Any thoughts?

Im guessing the big metal circlip clamps the rear drum section to the middle bit and there is a big O ring or similar in between?

    I guess my options are..

1)leave it and wait and see

2)Strip it and replace whatever seal is in there

3)Slip the metal clamp off and blob it was some kind of sealant?

    Thanks for any thoughts..

With a machine of this age I would suggest option one, followed by option three. 😉

Unusual for these to leak but anything can happen, the seal is replaceable but its a massive job on one of these (possibly the worst Of all indesit’s) Iv been jumping on one of these before trying to get a new rear to fit the front but if your not changing the rear panel it SHOULD go back on ok.

What are the bearings like ? Any movement in the inner drum as the spider snapping and the inner drum cutting through the outer tank is more common than leaking from the seal.

Thanks for the replies…i didnt check for bearing wear but on the face of it,it sounds ok,works ok and has no other apprent issues or sources of leakage. In fact its a great piece of kit. Theres a lot to be said for simple two knob machines..see my previous posting on AEG drier woes.. I think on balance the watchful waiting approach mind be best. I do wonder why they mounted the motor almost vertically central below the drum but then i guess they have to factor in the weight of the motor with the centrifugal foces at play when it revs up the drum…I wonder if there is any value in blobbing the bearings with HMP grease or are they fully sealed?

When it finally dies i will certainly replace it with similar !

I would respectfully suggest that to do that would be to make very big mistake. 😉

    Bearings are sealed.

IC…so what brand would you suggest from the two knob variety of washer?

Sadly you cannot really buy what you call a ‘two knob’ washer these days.

On my area I have countless Hotpoint/Hoover/Zanussi and other machines that are all around 20 years old or more, still in good working order. Like your machine the have a fully mechanical control timer and some of them have a separate thermostat control as yours does. A very reliable set up but the manufacturing costs of making a mechanical timer allied with the fact that you cannot make such machines run as economically as modern, electronically controlled machines means there are no real ‘two knob’ machines on the domestic market.

You may see machines with two or three knobs on the front but these will all be connected to a large electronic module on the inside. The Indesit electronics are not the most reliable on the market but can be very costly to repair, they need specialist software or expensive hardware keys to programme them.

A large number of the budget, £200 to £350 machines have totally sealed outer drums, that includes all Indesit Company products. This makes the machines uneconomic to repair. A bearing failure ( common on all sealed tub machines ), a sock or bra wire stuck inside that cannot be retrieved requires a complete outer drum to repair it. You need to budget around £450 to £500 upwards to get into even half decent quality.

Keep your old tub running for as long as you can. you would have to spend well over £500 to get one as solid today. 😉

Thanks..I shall try. I checked today and no signs of leakage so nipping up the band must have done something for it.

On the subject of “two knob” washers..i had thought that washers such as mine had a cam/switch/type programmer knob which was operated sequentially as the motor turned the cams but i notice a small box of tricks on this washer too,,tucked away in the base at the bottom. I’m assuming its not an electronic memory module but has something to do more with power switching/speed control?

Yes it’s the motor control module.
