    Hi,

Have just found this board which is a great resource for all appliance-related queries and I would like general advice with buying an American Fridge Freezer.

Wife was looking for a tall refrigerator and we settled on a Bosch before we realised that we will also need to replace our freezer and hence the search for an American style side-by-side with an ice/water dispenser.

I was considering a Bosch but was then taken by a Samsung G-Series RSG5UCRS which retails at a little over £1k and gets rave reviews from the public and a certain retailer.

By coincidence I then found a thread highlighting problems on Samsung FFs from around 2006 and I would ask if they have solved their problems yet or if I should still steer clear?

If I don’t go for a Samsung it looks as though I shall have to stump up another £3-400 for a Bosch and my next question would be is there any preference these days for Bosch/Neff/Siemens or are they much of a muchness and they all seem to hover around the £1,500-1,600.

Thanks in advance of any replies and suggestions.

    regards,

    Hi

No Samsung have not sorted out there problems and never will with the attitude that they have. We’ve stopped making the model so don’t have to worry about it.

Do you have enough room to put a tall fridge and tall freezer next to each other ? If you do then that would be a better option.
I would suggest looking at the gorenje range as they also manufacture for a lot of different people also.

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks for advice and I must admit to never having heard of Goranje previously. To answer your query, we do have the space available and initially considered buying a Bosch tall refrigerator and when our kitchen is extended we could add a Bosch freezer with a connection strip between so the units would look as a single appliance, but from what I recall their tall freezers are 60cm wide and I can’t imagine how we would fill such a huge volume.

I also quite liked the convenience of an ice/chilled water dispanser which is how I ended up reviewing the option of an American style freezer as it would fit the bill nicely – ie compact but with plenty of features – which I guess means that there has to be a compromise somewhere.

Having now looked quickly at the Gorenje range, it looks as though they do not make one with an ice/water dispenser and I also note that their model ref ‘Gorenje NRS85728X Frost Free Side by Side Fridge Freezer’, bears an uncanny resemblance to the ‘Bosch AvantiXX KAN62V41GB American Fridge Freezer’ – at around £100 cheaper, although the specifications are different – could it be that they manufacture for Bosch?

On another topic if I wanted to extend a warranty from 2years to 5years would it be cheaper to take out a seperate 3rd party policy?

Many thanks for reviewing and advice.

    Regards,

They manufacture for many “brands” and yes it has been said they are producing some models for Bosch.

    Hi

There is the twist ice function on the gorenje range.

And there is the option what most customers do anyway is to fill the water bottle up from the dispenser and put in the fridge for use during the day, instead fill from the tap and put into fridge to cool.

You will be surprised how easy you would find to fill the freezer.Servicing and selling for the gorenje range is done by the independent engineers also who have the knowledge of what they are selling rather than the chains that treat them as a box to make profit.
