    Hi,

I have just had an engineer round to confirm our suspicions that the bearings have had it in our 18 month old Hotpoint BHWM129. We only had the 1 year warranty and the quote of £190 is to steep considering the work would only be guarenteed for 3 months after the fix.
The engineer advised that bearings should not be broken after 18 months and that if I paid out £40 for an engineers report, I could use this to help gain compensation by going back to the original retailer (Next in this case) with a letter and report.
I have seen the writeups regarding the 6 years of which goods should last based on reasonable amount of use etc and wondered whether the engineer is giving good advice or if he is just trying to make an easy £40.

To me it sounds logical as a major part should not be dead after 18 months of use (even if with a family of 5).

    Any help would be appreciated.

Now fed up with replacing washers as this is 5th in 13 years. Wish I had looked into washers sooner as I would have just stumped up for something like a Miele or ISE last time.

    Thanks for any help.

I wish you luck on that idea but in law you will have to have incontrovertible proof that the goods were faulty right from the start!

The retailer has a responsibility to you the customer for up to 6 years after the original purchase date. That responsibility extends to treating any future breakdowns or failures with due credence. The term ‘fair wear and tear’ plays a major part in this overall assessment and all mechanical devices are subject to these effects. Compensation can be offered by the retailer in extreme cases where the customer has proven the goods where faulty.

It is fair to say that sadly a Hotpoint BHWM129 is not exactly a machine I would expect to last much more than a year or two anyway. The build quality is at best basic, at worst Italian.

    Hi,
Thanks very much for the response. I will have look into it and may approach the retailer first, before paying up for an engineers report.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Mark,

Also remember that, unless you bought your machine using a Next card then Next are not the retailer. Look at the very bottom of their homepage very closely.

You will actually be dealing with a company called DRL Limited.

Pretty sure it wad ordered on Next account. Thanks for info anyway.
Now need to decide whether to fork out for the Miele 5740 with 10 yr warranty or the cheaper 3204 (i think that was the model) which seems nearly as good but has 5 year warranty and slightly smaller load size.

Had looked at that already but at £770 the 5740 the miele was already a stretch. Shame as I like the general ethos of the ISE.

    Thanks anyway

    Re: Advice regarding broken machine

Actually just stumbled over a 2nd Miele that is only a few months old that is local to me. Does anyone know if the 8 year extended warranties are transferable? Also the initial 2 year one?

    Thanks

No guarantee is transferable to a third party….you’re on your own with that one!
