ParticipantHi everyone
I have been looking at LG washer/dryers and on paper they look really good, particularly the direct drive models.
Can anyone pls advise on how good they really are and what their reliabilty record is and also how good their customer services is?

Hi bmc,
Points to consider:1) All washer dryers are a bit of a pig in a poke – the wash part will function perfectly well, but the dryers are hopeless in comparison with a stand alone tumble dryer. Half a load max to dry, 90-120 mins drying time and heavy fabrics (denim/courdroy and the like) will NOT dry – you can finish them with the iron, but isn’t that defeating the object?
2) The LG range seem to suffer from premature drum bearing failure in service. This is usually a pretty heavyweight repair, often involving a tub change – out of guarantee it’s a big bill!
3) Service is outsourced by LG, so you would be very likely to get a visit from one of our lovely members, who will no doubt do an excellent job assuming the spares are available – they do come from Korea…..
If you’ve got space (or hoards of kids) ALWAYS go for separates – if you’re on your own, the machine will do an adequate job, within the limitations of the dryer. Perhaps consider an extended warranty with this purchase?

Thanks for the reply, Penguin45!
So its back to the drawing board then!
I guess from what you’re saying even an LG washer on its own seems risky.
Is the bearing failure due the massive load capacity of their machines (7kg dry load is the largest I’ve seen so far)?
The largest Bosch machines “only” do 5kg.
I am not into purchasing extended warranties – I expect any decent appliance to last at least 5+ years.I will look into separates – what do you make of these compact dryers?
Cheers

ParticipantThe Bosch washers seem to be 6kg across the range at the mo – WFO2466 Classixx seems to be a reasonable choice – 1200 spin and 2 years warranty as standard.
Most of the manufacturers do a compact dryer these days – Hotpoint/Creda is the most popular one, but Zanussi, White Knight and others all make acceptable versions.
