AEG 1370 intermittently trips main breaker on spin

I have an AEG 1370 Turbo washing machine (<> WOW!) which is about 9 years old. It has just started to misbehave having been a model of reliability compared to other machines I have had (take a bow, Mr H**ver). Occasionally on the spin cycle it will trip out the main switch in the consumer unit (not the ring circuit one). My first thought was that the vibration was causing something to short out but having had a reasonable poke around inside (although it’s not that easy to get to some parts) I can’t see any signs of arcing and all the looms I can see/get to are in good nick and not rubbed or chafed at all.

Anyone able to offer suggestions? I would be most grateful.

It is likely the Motor Brushes are shorting to earth (usual thing for its age) and will need replacing I guess by now. Not an expensive repair and a simple job for a local engineer to sort for you 😉

If you let us have the full model number AND the PNC number (9 digits beginning with 9** *** ***) will can be more specific as to the likely cost 🙂

Thanks for the tip, Martin.

I assume it only happens as it goes onto spin because of the higher loading?

The motor is relatively accessible – I should be able to change the brushes and clean up the commutator without too much trouble; I did think it looked a bit dusty and grimy as I was poking around looking for wiring faults.

If I have any trouble sourcing the parts, I’ll take up your offer.
