AEG 52380 Competence Oven Digital Display Fault

I have the above oven and it is driving me crazy and I would appreciate some advice.

Recently, the clock on the oven seems to have failed. The numbers on the display will randomly disappear and when they do return it’s to the “12:00” default setting with the lower right light (which sets the time) flashing.

With the clock in that state (with the time unset) the oven will not work at all. Similarly, with the no numbers on display it will not work either.

Pressing any of the three buttons (left goes back in time, right goes forward, middle accepts the current time) can either work as intended or it can cause the clock to immediately power off and display nothing again, at which point it’s anybody’s guess as to when it will return to the “12:00” default setting and the whole process starts again. The wait can be minutes, or it can be hours.

I’m not an electrician but the power supply to the oven doesn’t seem to be a problem (turning the left hand knob that selects between the oven, the grill, etc always brings on the corresponding light) and the problem seems to be with the clock itself.

However, I’ve been able to find nothing online that discusses any kind of similar problem, and it would be good to find out before I call out an engineer if this sort of issue can be rectified quickly and economically.

If a repair is likely to be simple and cost effective then I’d go down that route but if it’s likely to be more complex and cost more than half the cost of a replacement then I’m inclined to buy a new oven rather than pay for a repair that will only be covered for a few months.

I’m sure that this isn’t a unique issue, but I understand that it’s probably not a common one. Any assistance that people can provide will be greatly appreciated.

From what you’ve said the timer/clock unit is faulty. 🙁
