AEG 6955 not taking conditioner

I have an AEG Lavamat 6955 washing machine bought about 1996. Most times (but not always) it does not take in the conditioner. I have taken the soap drawer out and thoroughly cleaned it and the syphon device, also poked wire in the water feed holes to clean them out on several occasions but it still fails to take it in. When it fails, there is some additional water in the compartment with the unused conditioner. Is this likely to be a faulty inlet valve only partly opening? or is there some other cause? I replaced the main inlet valve about 3 years ago.

If there is water in the container then it suggests the valve is OK.

It could be that the conditioner is too thick but its more likely to be a gunged up dispenser drawer top.

Not the easiest of things to open up and clean out though TBH.
