ParticipantYou may recall from an earlier post I’m currently using an AEG 72630 which will be 21 years old in a couple of months. The machine performs brilliantly apart from it really struggles to balance the load before going into a spin phase. With a heavy load you can hear the drum actually bang and it will then wobble from side to side as the spin starts to build.
Due to it’s age, I’m guessing maybe the dampers are shot? With the back of the machine removed, I can push the drum down with two fingers which makes the damper easily contract. Should there be more resistance required before the damper kicks into action?
Whilst the back was removedI took off the belt and then tried to lift the drum from the front lower inside rim; there was no up and down movement at all. So I guess the bearings are fine?
I was going to buy a new machine, but having found compatible dampers @ £9.95 each through this site I’m prepared to give them a go. Do you guys think the dampers are the likely cause?
I remember when we bought this machine for mom back in 2000 and everyone used to comment how quiet it was; I dont recall it ever being like this.

Moderatorwhen dampers are new you would struggle to move them with 2 hands so yes they are well shot

ParticipantThanks Dave. Looks like I need to place an order!

ParticipantWell I replaced the dampers yesterday, but sadly the new ones seem to have made little difference. Doing a load of towels at the moment, and despite the machine trying to balance the load, it ends up going into a spin with the drum banging and the actual machine itself shaking continuously. I had to pause and restart the cycle before the machine shook itself to death! The two springs do not appear to be damged so I’m not sure where to go from her. At 21 years old I don’t want to spend much on the machine, despite the perfomance in all other aspects being far better than modern machines.

ParticipantYes they were, there was virtually no resistance in the old ones.

Moderatoryou may have just been unlucky and had a bad load. you also had the worst load possible as towels hold a lot of water.
check its draining ok as lacdk of draining can cause balance issues

ParticipantYeah it drains great, you can hear the force of the water as it’s connected to the U bend on the sink. The towels were the second load, the first was two pairs of jeans and three pairs combat style trousers.
Clutching at straws now but, could worn brushes cause a balancing issue? As far as I’m aware they’ve never been changed in 21 years, but the machine has never failed to go through a cycle – apart from when the pump needed replacing. It’s a shame if I’ve got to give up on it.September 5, 2021 at 1:10 pm #478776electrofix
Moderatoryou may be able to hear it draining but as a double check just fill it on a rinse and let it drain. you shouls see the water drop away fairly quickly
as for brushes, as they start to fail they start sparking as they only just make contact, this can alter the distribute speed and cause a lump in the washing

Moderatorhave you tried it with no clothes in ?
plus if you turn the inner drum does the silver inner drum seem to be running true ?

ParticipantI put it on a rinse cycle last night with an empty drum, it empties really fast. The spin cycle is silky smooth when the machine is empty, there is no up and down movement on the inner drum, which also moves freely.

Moderatorits hard to come up with a reason what it is
what I was thinking was drum spider. if an arm of the spider has fractured it allows the drum to go out of true as it speeds up
when you say it bangs have you actually seen the drum hitting the caseing ?
Dave

ParticipantI haven’t seen it hitting the casing, but as it starts to spin it will bang as if it has hit the casing and depending how unbalanced it is, the bang turns into a knocking as the spin increases. If by any chance the machine balances the load, the spin is really smooth.
I did wonder about the spider. Not sure if that’s a job I can do. I’ll check out a few youtube videos.

ParticipantAh, looking at the price of a replacement spider, after 21 years I wouldn’t bother!

Moderatorcheapest i can see it is just under £100
but we would need to check it would fit as there are 18 machines with this model
