ParticipantHi there
Our oven (bought in Nov 2004) has just decided to start cutting out after about 15 minutes BUT the clock remains on even though the function and temperature dials don’t. We had this problem just a year after we bought it although I don’t remember whether the clock remained on then. I called out an engineer to fix it as I didn’t know about your very useful site back then 😀
We think it might be the ZN Limitor as that looks like what I remember being replaced and what might be the solution after reading your forums and self help pages.
My husband has pulled out the oven and the existing part looks ok, would it show signs of damage? He is capable of doing a straight swap but isn’t going to meddle if it’s more complicated.
We are quite happy to order the part from yourselves but would appreciate some advice as with the clock light remaining on it’s a little disconcerting. Also don’t want to order a part when maybe it could be something else that’s wrong.
Many thanks

Has your husband checked the limiter for continuity with his multimeter?

No, he hasn’t got one. He just wanted to look to see if it was anything obvious.

Hi Marmot: Unfortunately the only way you can really tell if the part is actually gone, is as Martin said by use of a Multimeter to check continuity through it. Other than this it’s replace the part on the off chance or call out a repair engineer, if you can borrow a meter from someone or buy a cheap meter from your Local Maplin store then 1 of us will be able to tell you how to check the part.

The thing is marmot using the ‘poke & hope’ technique can be risky and dangerous. We have to assume those asking the questions do have some electrical knowledge and one would hope a multimeter at the very least in order to check and test components. Needless to say before attempting any inspection it is vital the appliance is fully isolated from the mains not only by switching off the cooker/oven isolation switch but also isolating that circuit at the main fuse box a useful precaution. Visual inspections yield little in establishing a circuit failure in cases like this, testing is the only true way to find out what has failed.

Many thanks you guys. I’ve phoned one of your recommended engineers and he’s coming out on Wednesday afternoon to have a look and hopefully fix it.
In response to Martin’s most sensible reminder I would seek to reassure him by adding that my husband always isolates the relevant circuit he’s working on at the fuse box. I did think when I posted the reply that we sounded a bit naive but my husband does know his limitations re electrical things. I just thought if something looked obviously wrong then you could maybe give a pointer towards repair or replacement.
