AEG Cooker, base element shorting to earth.

Hi all, I have a really strange problem with this cooker. The base element for the top oven has just shorted out on the mains terminal block on the back panel of the appliance. It must have moved due to vibration from the oven fan… it only needed to move about 1/2 inch.

On inspection, the heater sits in a tray that just slots into the cavity on top of the lower oven insulation but has no method of fixing. It just sits there! There is nothing at all to fix it to. 😕

Has anyone ever had cause to take one of the elements out? I really can’t understand how it should be held in and if there is a part of the cabinet missing? The exploded diagram on the TDS disc doesn’t help.

It’s a graded machine by the way.

Any thoughts?

What are those bent over tabs in the foreground? Locating/securing lugs maybe?

The tabs bent over at the front are holding the element to the tray. There are a few unused tabs but nothing to secure the tray to the machine. It’s a real mystery.
I was hoping that perhaps someone would recognise the element and shed some light on how it should fit

I have had a look at the TDS disk, there does not seem to be any fixings listed. I will email you the TDs pictures of the ovens 😉

Thanks for the pictures Mal, I do have the TDS disk but thanks anyway.

I’m thinking that there must be a bit missing from the machine as it just can’t be right. If the appliance was carried with a slight backwards tilt the element tray would just fall backwards. This is basically what happened to this appliance and it shorted out the mains terminal block. I think it must have moved due to vibration from the oven fan.

I have only found those elements held in by friction, and as such tend to be fairly tight to move.

Could you not put something as a physical blocker, perhaps mounted off the earth tag?

Gosh! Earthing! I hadn’t given that a thought. There is no earth tag on the heater tray. There is no friction as the tray is just sitting on the fibre insulation. It’s a two inch high cavity!

Just another thought, it’s a graded model, the last three letters of the model no. probably sums it up 😆
