AEG Favorit 40010V1 integrated dishwasher

Dishwasher is about 4 years old.

When turned on the left hand four lights flash on and off. They look slightly dimmed. There is a sound that is like a swishing, as if poor connection. These will flash maybe around 8 times before the light 5th from the left will also flash and rinse light. I can’t see an obvious pattern in the flashing.

However, if you press one of the programme buttons, the light comes on bright, and the dishwasher will happily run though a cycle properly!

Any ideas, please?

Perhaps its better described as the lights dimming with noise on switch on. Any ideas, please?
