Background: Unit was new in 2003. After two years good service, began to stop mid-cycle with two lights (dry and finish) flashing. Mains off, then on again and program would start from beginning.

AEG engineer called. Knew exactly what was wrong. Replaced ‘labyrinth’ (plastic panel with multiple channels on LHS). System working fine again.

Current Problem: Three weeks ago, exact same symptoms. Different engineer called. Very unfamiliar with system. Despite my suggestions(!) declared motor was problem and left! Two weeks later turned up again – with new labyrinth! Fitted same, but forgot the screws that secure it to water inlets! Ran that evening – kitchen flooded.

Yesterday, came again with screws. Fitted them and tested. Part way through cycle, exact same symptoms. Grabbed test meter, found mains supply slightly low (Europe – 220v) and declared that was the problem. I couldn’t argue.

Last night monitored mains. Voltage virtually constant at 230-235v. Problem occurred four times in 30 minutes. NOT THE MAINS!!

Today checked overflow pan and sensor – no problems there. Does anybody know why I am still getting this problem, please?

Is there any pattern to the end lamp flashing – ie 1-2-3-4-pause-repeat?

No – the end lamp, dry lamp and program lamp (whichever one I selected) all flash simultaneously at about 2Hz. Nothing does anything at that point. Power off, power on again, immediate reset and can start again.

    A bit more information:

The problem seems to occur first pretty consistently about 18 minutes into the “Quick 50” cycle. The hot wash has completed, the pump-out is fine, the refill is fine, then about three minutes into the cold rinse, the system stops.

If I restart, the problem normally recurs within five to ten minutes, sometimes as little as three. Is this a warm-up problem?

I have removed the controller cards and checked them carefully. There is no visual evidence of any dry joints, nor any burnt or faulty joints. No smell of ‘burning varnish’ or similar to indicate component overheating.

Referring to a point made in my original post, during this latest test, the voltage was varying between 213 and 226 during the hot wash cycle and everything performed perfectly. During the cold rinse, the heater is not on (obviously!) and the voltage is well within normal limits.

I should explain that I live in a rural area where the mains regulation is, indeed, pretty dire, but this machine has worked well for five years in those conditions!
