Hi, I have a 20-year old AEG fridge/freezer (Model:4085-7AG) that has been fine all this time. The other day I came down in the morning to find it dead. Traced the power to the board and discovered the on-board transformer had overheated and burnt out. I managed to get another transformer (E30/15.5). I replaced the burnt out transformer and it worked for a couple of days. Then it went again. Same thing, transformer overheated and burnt out.

Any ideas as to what is causing the transformer to be overloaded? Both the fridge and the freezer worked correctly, getting down to the set temperatures (+5 and -18, respectively). Then after a couple of days the new transformer overheated.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Ralph.

problem here is it could be anything that causes a short. most likley an electrolitic but it could be anything on the board with an intermittant short

    Hi Dave, Thanks!

Hmmm… I could change all the electrolytic capacitors on the board, without too much trouble, and get another transformer. There are a couple of what look like ballast capacitors (?) down by the compressors. Could they be faulty too and cause the transformer to melt?

My problem is I have that very dangerous thing – a little knowledge! But I would like to fix it if I can, otherwise it is a trip to the shops and a new one, anything like this, is going top cost a King’s ransom.
