One of the contol knobs on this hob is stuck tight. It will not turn. I have a scrapped old hob of the same type on which the knobs turn easily. When I dismantle the old hob and examine the gas control valves I see that the valves have a conical seat inside and a conical part that sits in that seat and rotates to allow the gas to flow. I assume that the reason the one knob is stuck tight is that this rotatable conical part is damaged on that hob. Do you think that a competent repairman could replace the rotatable part in the malfunctioning hob with the same part from the scrapped hob or would it be likely that the seat itself is damaged? If that is not a solution, then could a competent repairman obtain a spare and replace the whole valve relatively easily?

The spare gas tap is now obsolete from AEG.

It’s doubtfull that any responsible Corgi registered engineer would be happy swapping second hand parts around to be honest, although some taps were OK to dismantle and repair/regrease quite safely.

I would suggest you call an engineer to have a look at the hob for you and advise further.

In all honesty, if the hob is at an age where parts are obsolete you may be as well to consider replacing it unless there are any implications due to special size or something of that ilk.

Yes, the cutout size is a problem. It will be a major exercise to enlarge it on the one side. But would the Corgi man be able to repair / unfreeze the stuck valve simply by lubricating it, and if so what sort of lubricant – the components are aluminium?

There is a specific compound available to us as gas engineers, he should have this, if you let us know your postcode, someone here may well be close to you and able to assist further.

Yes and stripping gas components to that degree could be very, very dangerous so you will have to get the appliance tested properly by somone competent to do so in order to ensure that there is no gas leakage.

I’d much appreciate it if you could recommend someone in the area. The postcode is London NW3 – Swiss Cottage.
