ParticipantHi,
I have been having some problems with my freezer for a few weeks now and I wondered if anyone on her can offer me any advice before I call an engineer out. My freezer has been struggling to maintain a temp of -18 and has, for the pass 3 weeks, been between -2 and -5. The red light is permanently flashing and the frostmatic button does not seem to be able to get the temp up.
There has been something that has been bugging me for some time and I am wondering if they are connected. At the top of the freezer there is a grill that hag of the top of the freezer. There are two little cylinder type plugs that attach the grill to the top and the grill is always dropped down. Is this normal? This has been like this since I bought the freezer in 2008.
There has also been a build up of ice under the grill. Today I turned the freezer off and chipped off all of the ice. There is some ice between the the dropped down grill and the ceiling of the freezer but not that much.
Does anyone know what the problem is and what I can do to get it fixed.
I have just thrown a big bin bag full of food away which is not good!
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards

Posting a picture would be helpful, don’t chip the ice off with anything metal or sharp.

Hi
This must be a common problem with this model, for some reason although it is a frost free freezer, this only applies to the inner cabinet and drawers etc., the works behind the top grill you speak about does frost up completely and stops the freezer working and you get the resulting temperature rise.
The only way to solve the problem is to completely defrost this part of the freezer, several ways you can do this, buy cans of freezer defrosting fluid, use a hair dryer – (this took me about 1 hour) which is what I did or do what the freezer man said to me is put the whole freezer into the garden for 5 days and let it defrost naturally, this is ok if there is no food in at the time. The only problem with the first two ideas is about 2-3 pints of water are discharged into the water tray above the motor which is insuffient to take this amount, I was fortunate at the time I had this frost-up problem happen to me the freezer was not in its outer cabinet so I just pulled the pipe the water runs out of into the evaporation tray and put it into a bucket.
I believe there must be a problem with this model of freezer as why is there an evaporation tray above the motor to catch defrosting water if it never gets to defrost in the first place. I have tried to get this problem solved with the manufacturer but have never had an answer from them.
