AEG lavamat 16820 washer dryer: start/pause button not opera

The machine is 10 years old.

All lights show red when a program selected, but pressing the start button does not start machine.
Sequence
Select wash program
Then press start button
The start light glows properly (solid) for 2 or 3 seconds and door close light goes red (from green) whooshing noise as though water is going to enter, then machine returns to flashing start button and no further action.
If no water in machine thendoor light turns green

Tried programs which take no water eg drain
Result is light goes solid for 2or 3 seconds, no whoosh and then returns the start light to flashing red

Have checked
filter and drain at Base
Turned on and off at mains
Checked Machine program delay is not selected

Any suggestions appreciated

now fixed

It was the dryer heater, simple to find if one could access the diagnostics program, which is probably common to all aeg machines and many other manufacturers. Machine checks functionality of parts of washing (fill, wash, heat-wash water, drain) and drying cycles fill, heat air, drain) before starting any wash program – so a dryer heater fault disables the machine even if no drying is required…..(!)
