I’ve just changed the brushes on my Lavamat 74720 update following C9 code. Unfortunately the C9 code persists despite trying to reset using Prewash+Quick wash buttons, whilst turning dial from off to ‘short spin’ (and other combinations..). On closer inspection I’ve notice that the new new brushes don’t sit very flush on the spindle(?not sure of correct term?) because the latter is worn with use. Could this lack of contact be causing the problem? I’ve been turning the shaft to try and get them ground in to no avail. Could the fault be caused by some other faulty component??

    All suggestions appreciated.

sounds like the commutator needs ‘dressing’ …use very fine emery and spin the motor by hand whilst holding the emery against the copper segments to polish them, then brush them out (an old toothbrush is ideal)
The brushes also need dressing…use a file to carefully file a taper on the sides of the carbon brushes…about 1mm should do the trick.
While you’re at it just double check you’ve fitted the brushes correctly, and the wires to them are also in place.
If still no go then there is a distinct possibility that the brush failure has damaged the module…you may need an engineer to diagnose that for you?

Thanks Clive, I’ll try that tomorrow morning after buying some emery paper. By the way, where is the ‘module’ you refer to? Part of the motor itself or the control module for the machine?

depends on the model…lavamat is a name that AEG have used for a number of years with many variations.
The older models have an electronic module fitted to the base plate of the cabinet which does occasionally suffer from dry solder joints or burnt connections.
The later models (which i assume you have)have the motor control built in to the main timer/pcb electronics.
It would be worth checking the motor cicuitry first though..simple continuity check accross the armature and field coils etc with an ohmeter would show if you’ve fitted the brushes correctly, and that the rest of the motor is ok too.

AEG LAVAMT clearing C9 error code after replacing brushes

CliveApplied these techniques to an AEG Lavamat 72600 that was showing error code C9. Replaced the brusehs but the washing machine equivalent of CTRL+ALT_DEL (complete reset) was different to that suggested above. With the Switch in the OFF position. Press and hold PRE-WASH and SOAKING buttons turn the control knob to Short Spin. Wait one or two seconds and all the indicators should illuminate. Then turn the control knob to OFF. All the indicators should go out. Then try and use your machine as normal. In my case this cleared the C9 error code.

Err – do you want to sign up and become a member tfcgw? Firstly, this is a dead thread, secondly you’re dishing out technical advice without any validation of your expertise, and thirdly I have never had to indulge in any form of reset procedure on any AEG appliance. Ever. Even after 19 years.

tfcgw’s post is not quite correct as those instructions refer to starting the ‘Service Test Procedure’ and NOT a means of resetting programme error on a 72600, and is therefore not to be recommended.

Re: AEG LAVAMAT – CHANGED BRUSHES BUT STILL C9 CODE

My (now sadly rather old) AEG 86720 Update has just indicated a ‘C9’ error (most likely towards the end of it’s spin cycle since it incated 2mins left to run) and as would be expected from reading this thread the motor no longer works.
I have some electrical experience and understand the basics of how electric motors work. Is replacing the brushes in one of these machines something a ‘keen amateur’ should attempt to do, and if so, are there any issues/problems I would likely face in doing so.

    Thanks in advance

It is most likely the carbon brushes have worn, pretty straightforward really once you’ve removed the motor.

    Power off of course :zap:

    Thanks Dave

Can I get the spares from you guys; if so, what part number do I need to quote.

    Many thanks,
    Matt

There are a couple of types, if you remove them, ensure that is where the problem is then either let me know if there’s any indication on the motor and/or brush holder as to the type, alternatively, get the digi camera out and send me a photo by email 🙂

Re: AEG LAVAMAT – CHANGED BRUSHES BUT STILL C9 CODE

    Dave

I took the motor out and removed the brushes, one side is extremely worn with the contact section on a spring hardly showing (I guess this is bad?)

The motor is an FHP with the following identification plate:
    UZ112 G70 Typ ME 002
    3K 083498 359 F5 2428

    Sach Nr: 645 248 850
    SBP: 645 260 610

The only identification on the brushes are L1E embosed on the plastic casing and 47N on the on the contact.

I hope this is enough for you to go on, if not, I can take a couple of photos.

    Many thanks,
    Matt
