Our old (and very unreliable) Hotpoint washer/dryer gave up the ghost yet again a few months ago and we replaced it with the AEG 16830 after doing some research.

The AEG has much to commend it BUT the clothes are coming out feeling much harder than with the old Hotpoint. My wife has tried most of the delicates and easy care programmes but to no avail. As with the Hotpoint, she always puts Fabric Softener (Comfort) in the relevant dispenser to the MAX level.

Anyone else got this problem? I’m not sure whether this is a fault with the machine (the softener certainly disappears) of whether it’s something we just have to live with!

    Any suggestions are very welcome.

Slow the spin down. 1600rpm is complete loony-tunes. You get past the point of extracting water and start to compress the fibres of the fabric instead.

Thanks for the reply Penguin45. We haven’t yet used the 1600 spin but my wife tells me she usually puts the washing back in after the initial wash/spin programme for a second spin (usually 1200 I think) to dry it more before it goes back for a tumble dry.

So, given your comments about compressing the fabric fibres, she says she will try abandoning that second separate spin for a while and see what transpires.
