Hi, I have a German made AEG Lavamat W1230, which doesn’t seem to be reaching the correct spin speed. At the end of the wash, my clothes are still very wet and take days longer to dry than they used to. Even handkerchiefs come out very wet. The machine spins, but I don’t think it’s getting over 300-600 RPM – it should be doing 1200. It also seems to spin for a very short time compared to my last washing machine (a Hotpoint, sorry but I can’t remember the model number).
Can you give me any advice on what I should try checking? I read that it could be the motor brushes, but that I would hear sparking sounds if they were badly worn, and I haven’t heard that. I also read that it could be the ‘program control timer’, and I’ve found one on Ebay for £35, but I don’t want to buy a new one if it’s not that. I’ve checked the back of the circuit board of the program control timer, for dry joints, but couldn’t see any obvious ones (I didn’t spend more than a minute or so checking, while I had the top off).

Visible check of the brushes is the only way to check them, make sure you unplug first. It is unwise to buy anything unless you are certain of the fault.

Hi spanishwhite, I’ve taken the machine apart and had a good look inside. I cleaned out the plastic box up by the waste tube, by putting some brass screws inside and shaking it, I’ve taken off the hose thingy that comes out of the bottom of the drum, and completely cleaned it, I’ve removed and blown through both of the black hoses that go from near the aforementioned hose thingy into the two pressure sensors, and put it all back together, but it still didn’t help.
But I’ve now obtained an English manual online, and I am pretty sure the timer is faulty. When the timer reaches the ‘Schleudern’ (spin) section on the main wash, it doesn’t spin, it empties the drum, then refills it, then empties it again, and instead of stopping, it immediately (and I mean immediately) goes onto the next program and starts filling with water again!
There is a second ‘Schleudern’ (spin) section on the next program, and if I turn it to that, it actually works, spins at about 300 RPM for 30 seconds, then 600 RPM for 30 seconds, and then at 1200 RPM for 60 seconds, and then I have to be quick to turn it off, or it immediately starts filling the drum with water again, as it’s moved onto the next program (it should stop according to the dial.)

Here is the manual if it helps explain better:

Is there any way I can check the timer to see if I can fix it? I know how to look for cold joints, but is it possible to clean the contacts or something? I can’t find anything online which explains washing machine timers, surprisingly. (At least, not that explains them well, with pictures, and more than a few sentences.)

Hi: Timers are classed as non repairable items, if you try to open them up then you will see internal parts fly everywhere. Please don’t try what some idiots suggest & spray it with WD40 etc as it can cause a nice bang & actually catch fire.
Your best bet is to contact a Good local engineer who can diagnose the fault properly. You could also try the UKWG repairs@ feature.

Hi, I think I’ll buy a second hand timer and fit it myself, see if that fixes the problem. If not I can just re-sell the timer. The washing machine only cost £25 (and was an absolute bargain, because it’s in great condition, and much better build quality than my old Hotpoint, that cost me 99p off Ebay!).
