AEG Lavatherm Condenser Dryer:

Went out to one of these about a month back and found that the element had gone, well I say element but it was the thermo temprature cut outs that had gone open. AEG refer to these as blow out stats.

Anyway fitted new element assembly machine working for nearly a month until yesterday when I get a call for no heat again. Found the thermo tempreture devices gone out again, theres not much info in the manual about the causes of these blowing but I have checked the fans, heat exchanger, filters and can see no reason why these have gone again ?

The Thermo devices are not available on there own only as a complete assembly. Anyone had any dealings with these

Could be customer shutting down machine before cycle finished?

Two possibilities to consider, the copper brush contacts on drum dirty and dryer then stops prematurely before cool down cycle complete. Or, the capacitor needs changing as motor stops under load with element still on full heat?

Hi.

First thing to check is that the heat exchange is clear. Secondly, the front felt bearing gets worn & over time lint gets trapped between the felt & drum cylinder. This causes the drum to ever so slightly slow during rotation, thus causing the fan to also slow which restricts air flow across the heater which causes the thermal fuses which are part of the heater to go open circuit.

One way to tell if this may be the case is if on the month old element there is a sign that the silver coating of the heater has bubbled or peeled away.

Thanks Spin Doctor, having checked the Heat Exchanger that is clear, I cannot say if the customer bypasses the cooldown period but looking in detail at what you said about the new element and tell tale signs of the Heater case being bubbled, yes this heater case has such bubbles both sides of the case and the wire filaments are distorted and it has only been on the machine about three weeks,.

I am in the process of stripping the machine down to remove the drum having removed the back exposing the drum. However the drum is a bugger to try to get out in order to inspect the front seal as you suggested, is there a knack to removing the drum as it is stuck fast ! Also would the real concertina seal require replacement ?

Mind you Connect are quoting £ 70 odd quid for that front felt Seal !

There are 8 or so screws at the front of the appliance, 2 of which are behind the control panel. These need to be unscrewed to allow the drum cylinder to be removed with the bearing assembly. When refitting, fit the new bearing assembly to the cylinder before replacing. Otherwise it is like putting toothpaste back ito the tube.

Thanks Spindoctor, I managed to sort that out ok, thing is the felt was well worn and having fitted the new felt and plastic surround I got it all back together for testing.

All working ok for a few cycles and then I noticed that the drum action seemed odd, by this I mean that when the drum turns clockwise, rests and then counterclockwise some of the rests were long, too long in my mind that this machine still applies power to the heater when pausing and the rear heater cover got bloody hot with no air flow, so I stopped it, disconnected the element and observed it further. I now think that the module has a intermittent fault in that every now and then when it should do a short tumble in between the main rotations it freezes and will not turn thus allowing the heater to heat and eventually blow the blow out fuses on the heater.

Have checked the motor, motor capacitor and associated wiring, this ones a real stinker, have you ever had this before ? the module is special order as well .
