AEG OKO FAVORIT 545 problem with anti-flooding/drain pump

Dishwasher worked perfectly until put on for 11 minute quick rinse and although the cycle finished and the water went, the drain pump continued to work even when the machine was switched off. It stopped when unplugged, but started again as soon as it was plugged back in, so presumably water below the wash tank must have activated the anti-flood float switch. Therefore, when unplugged, I tilted the machine up and as expected a small amount of water leaked out and on plugging it back in, the drain pump was inactive. I suspect the problem could be a a build-up of gunge in the pressure chamber, but don’t know how to access it. I tried pouring a mixture of about half a pint of boiling water and concentrated dishwasher powder into the machine, waited five minutes, and set the machine for the last few minutes of the draining cycle, which it performed and switched itself off normally. I thought perhaps a really hot wash cycle would do the trick. However, on pushing the machine back into place, I noticed a trickle of water on the floor ( and that was from only half a pint) so I am apprehensive of trying a complete cycle. Standard fault on these is the fill matrix on the left hand side of the machine becoming clogged. Plenty of other places it can leak from, but that was the common one. Observation is the only way to be sure though.

Matrix is p/no 8896464032-23/5, around £40 plus the usual from memory. An emailt to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get things moving for you.

Power off, if investigating.

Many thanks for your reply. I tried running a hot cycle, which completed successfully ( no water left inside machine and no further noise from pump). However, after a while I noticed a slow but continuous leak on the floor, presumably from water below the wash tank. I rang an engineer who told me that it was probably the circulation pump which would cost approx £160 + labour and I’d be better off buying a new dishwasher. I would be grateful for your opinion. Does your diagnosis still stand? I would appreciate it if you could tell me how I actually access the inside for further investigation, i.e. take sides off or from underneath or back?? Thanks for your help.

You will need to get the side panels off and have a good look – I can only offer suggestions unless you live in Leeds, in which case I could come and fix it for you 😀 .

I removed side panel and, yes, the matrix does look clogged. I can’t actually see where the water is leaking from though.

Eight years ago, the drain pump came on intermittently and the engineer who came changed both the drain pump and the pressure chamber (which seems to be what you call the matrix). From the information I have given, can you speculate as to whether in this case that would be necessary (and probably not worth it) or if changing the matrix alone would be sufficient (and worth it)?

Incidentally, I DO live quite near to Leeds, so if you’re serious……… 😀 .

When it gets bunged up, the water backs up inside the chamber and will either overflow out of the top, or through a small vent towards the front. It’s usually pretty obvious….. If it isn’t you need to search elsewhere. The retaining nut for the lower rotor post can work loose, salt chamber retaining nut ditto, There is a side vent in the machine and water can weep from the joint there as well.

The matrix (or pressure chamber) is p/no 8996464032-23/5, about £40 last time I checked, so not too bad. I can see no merit in changing the drain pump unless it is actually leaking.

Thanks for your help. I took the sides off and searched everywhere but couldn’t find a leak. The matrix seemed to be okay; not leaking, although a little mucky. I am now in the situation where the machine works fine for about ten washes, then the pump comes on, I tip it up and drain it and it works for another ten washes and so on! Obviously there must be a slow leak somewhere, but I have checked all your recommendations and can’t find anything. The engineer told me over the phone that it’s probably the pump and not worth repairing because of its age so was unwilling to come out. I have been in this situation for nearly five months now and although I can use the machine, I’m fed up of all the mopping up!!. Any suggestions please?

I suppose it’s decision time……. If you can’t spot the leak, others may have little chance. As far as I can tell without the eNr/Pnc no, the last 545s were made in 1993, so she’s a bit of an old lady.

Time to move on?

try checking the drain pump they were notorious for leaking through the shaft seal unplug before investigating
