ParticipantI’m a generalist engineer/diyer, keen to fix things myself because I can as much as to save money. If someone can offer any advice, particularly what the part is called and if it is possible to clean/repair it rather than replace ?
I’ve been pulling out and tipping over the machine to drain in each time the C3 ‘leak detected’ code comes on, all the while meaning to watch it through a cycle to find the leak.
Today I’ve spend the time and watched it. As soon as it starts to fill a slight trickle of water comes out of the overflow pipe into the little plastic shapes along the side.
The pipe comes from the plastic cassette thing on the side where the water enters from the inlet valve, leaves via the pump, and has four other holes with grommets that slot into what looks like a filter/pump etc.
I managed to remove this ‘cassette’ and gave it a good blasting with the garden hose through various holes, soaked it with bicarb of soda and boiling water. Lots of gunk came off, but lots still remains – its a maze in there !
Anyway, I re-fitted, and re-tested. The water trickles out just the same.
There doesn’t seem to be a leak anywhere else, and water only comes out each time it fills, so I strongly suspect this is where the problem is.
So, a) whats the thing called (should I need to get a replacement) ?
b) any tips on cleaning it ?
c) any suggestions on narrowing down the problem if it isn’t that ?I reckon I have a few weeks before my wife forces me to replace a perfectly good dishwasher (apart from this tiny leak) – its only 15 years old, so it would be an outrage to junk it.

Not one to give up I spent another few hours searching after no response here (did nobody else know the answer or am I not asking in the right way – or in the right place ? )
Well the ‘thing’ is called a metering tank. Once I’d worked that out I found the right part was £27 delivered from Ransome Spares. Its odd – it didn’t come up looking through hundreds of items of ‘AEG Dishwasher Spares’ – but as soon as I knew what it was called I found it in seconds. Fitted in minutes and no leak now.
With hindsight the time I spent trying to clean it was a waste given the price to replace. One more bit of plastic in landfill, but at least its save a whole dishwasher from being scrapped for another year or two.
