    My machine has become very loud when spinning, the machine is seven years old now and we are a family of six so it has worked hard. Would you agree that it’s probably the main drum bearing that needs replacing?

    If this were the case how realistic and or economical would it be to attempt to fit a replacement?

    This is a “split tank” Zanussi in a posh frock. You can do the drum bearings, but it is an absolute cow of a job. Tank has to be removed in it’s entirity and separated into it’s halves before a major assault with a steel bar and a big hammer. Particular attention must be paid to the condition of the drum shaft – any grooving or marks, especially on the brass ring at the front means that it will have to be changed as well.

    To be fair, if you have a logical mind and make lots of diagrams, it’s quite straightforward, just very hard work and slow. This is definitely worth a read:
