    We’ve got an AEG Competence D4150 double oven.

    We’ve had it for a few years now, without any problems, but the missus has taken up baking – sponges, pies, that kind of thing.
    This has made it fairly obvious that there is an ‘issue’ with the oven. The back right-hand corner of the bottom (fan) oven gets much hotter than the rest of the oven meaning that sponges etc burn on the back edge before the front is anywhere near cooked.

    Any idea why a fan oven would get extra-hot in one place? I can see the fan whirring around so that looks like it is working.
    The thermostat (4-inch metal prong with a cable coming out of it) at teh back of the oven looks corroded, a bit rusty-ish. But if the thermostat was gash then wouldn’t the whole oven get hot?

    Save me from having to buy a new oven!

    There could be a number of issues but these are the common.
    Firstly, you mention that it is the bottom right hand corner. I hope I am not stating the obvious here but presumably the food is not being cooked on the floor of the oven as all cooking should take place on the shelves.
    Secondly, fan ovens as a rule blow all of the heat out of the edges/sides so therefore it can be hotter at the bottom, very top and sides. For that reason any trays/baking sheets used should be no bigger than the roasting/baking/grill tray that came supplied with the cooker as this ensures that the air can circulate correctly. Similarly, there should only be one sponge tin per shelf. Two are ok if they take up no more space than the AEG tray/tin supplied.
    Thirdly, is the door shutting properly? Sponges and pastry are very indicative of temperature variations and are in fact used for British Standard testing of cookers. Rather than there being a hot spot at the rear of the oven, it could be that the door seal is perishing or the door itself has warped out of shape and so heat is being lost. The way to check this is to switch on the fan and with the door closed press the door to the oven and see if you hear a change in the sound of the fan. Where the sound changes this indicates where the air is escaping.
