I have had the fridge for 2.5 years and for the first 2 of those it worked perfectly.

Around 6 months ago it had its first problem. Sometimes, when the door was opened , the light comes on, goes off then comes of again. There is no physical actuator for the light so I assume it is a reed switch on one of the PCB’s that controls it.

The more severe problem started a month ago. Occasionally, but with increasing frequency now (every few days), the fridge has got itself into a complete failure mode. Unplugging and plugging back in leaves it in exactly the same state unless it is turned off four around 6 hours, once or twice it actually cleared itself. If it is unplugged and plugged in again, the compressor starts and then after 2 seconds, there is a click from the relay on the main control board, the display panel clears while the compressor stops, and then the fridge ‘restarts’, repeating the same steps. The compressor does not usually run at this time presumably, from what I have read, because the starter can only switch in the second set of windings in the compressor once in a set period.

Does this sound like a control board failure or is there something else that could be causing this.

I did disassemble the front panel and found three pcb’s, one with a big square component on it which I assumed could be a large relay and the main control board with a smaller board wired to it for the front panel.

I did think of replacing the electrolytic capacitors on the main board even though none appeared to have catastrophically failed. as without schematics I can’t see where else I would attack (the number of sky boxes that I have fixed with this process….). Other than that, my next course of action would be to try to get replacement boards.

What does the trained/experienced individual think of this course of action. Is there anything I should try first?

The only thing we did notice was that on a couple of occasions, it had coincided with us using the electric oven in the kitchen, although that might just be because we were there to see it.

As another clue, the fridge appeared to have worked fine for two days and was happily sitting at +5C according to the display. While I was standing next to it commenting that it seemed to be happy recently, there was a click and when I looked again it was showing +8C. I opened the fridge door, the light came on, went off and came back on again as all the displays blanked. The temperature reading now said +5C again…….
