Participanthi everybody, i’d like some expert opinion or user opinion if its possible in order to choose between two chest freezers.
the one is AEG A82700HLW0 website from manufacturer > http://www.aeg.co.za/Products/Coolin…ers/A83400HLW0 . and the other one is liebherr 3032-20 manufacturer website > http://www.liebherr.com/HG/en-GB/reg…0069-0_38939-0
currently i have both at home and i must return one of them. bought the aeg first but it formed ice where the lock was. the maintenance person played with the cover door and made thing worse. now the walls start forming ice as well half height from the top.
called the store and said i want a replacement. so i choose liebherr because it has no lock.
my main questions are
1) the aeg claims 45 hours Storage time during malfunctions. the cover door is 11cm thick and the walls are 10cm thick. the liebherr on the other hand claims 65 hours Storage time during malfunctions but the cover door is 7cm thick and the walls are 7cm thick as well. how can the aeg which has thicker walls claim less storage time during malfunctions while the liebherr with thiner walls claim linger time ? do you know if they use different insulation material ?
2) the aeg has a monitor on the handle to control temp while the liebherr has mechanical controls on the handle. do you think the electronic controls of the aeg would be more accurate ?
thanks for your timeNovember 12, 2013 at 3:20 pm #404343don

Hi epsa
I don’t know about products in South Africa but here in the UK the guys on here will always recommend Liebherr first as they are the best.
I guess you know by now which way we would go 😉

thanks for the answer Don
well to be honest with you i dont know about products in South Africa either 🙂 i dont reside there but in europe.
i was expecting some technical info about the insulation used in both cases in order to have a clear understanding of the specifications. you see there are no industrial standards, as far as i am aware of, in measuring Storage time during malfunctions. so aeg people could take measurements at shahara while liebherr people could take them in the alps, hidden inside a cave, at night , during winter 🙂 .November 13, 2013 at 8:41 am #404345epsa

Hi
The liebherr Is a far better unit but the fault that you seem to think your AEG has does mean its actually faulty.
How full was your chest freezer ? Ice well snow WILL form at the easiest exit point from the cavity as cold will cause a vacuum on the lid and the air will escape at the point it has less resistance.
If it wasn’t full then its freezing AIR which is approx 70{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} water. (and no I don’t want to get into a debate with percentages) this will go to the coldest points which are the walls of the internal chest freezer and will cause thin ice droplets and a skim of frosting.
If you intend to run 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} full the fill the bottom half of the freezer with 3/4 full bottles of water and put a sheet of stiff cardboard or ply on top of them thus reducing the air capacity thus reducing the amount of frost.

hi Bryan and thanks for the answer
the first freezer (aeg) was about 40{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} full, the two baskets on top where full and the other products on the bottom. the ice started forming exaclty around the lock near the cover-door. after the technician got involved it got much worse and expanded to the walls all around, half height from the top.
i kept the liebherr and turned it on today morning living the thermostat at 2.5 which shlould be around -20C . i left it for three hours and then moved the frozen stuff from the first freezer to the liebherr. i left a digital thermometer inside to monitor the tempreture. the tempreture is ranking from 19 to 21 but the red light which indicates a high tempreture hasn’t stop blibking ever since i turned it on !!! its been almost 12 hours since i turned it on and it still blinks and the tempreture is falling even lower !! i think i got a second faulty unit…November 13, 2013 at 10:06 pm #404348admin

HI
You should leave a chest freezer running for 24hrs before putting anything in it..Also as I have said your trying to freeze AIR. pack it with boxes with crumpled paper in it and leave it shut. then start to fill the base with containers of water. this will be the most efficient way to run your freezer.
I very much doubt it’s faultyBryan

i understand what you wrote but you see i am no expert when it comes to chest freezer operation so i just read the manual and acted accordingly. nowhere did it state that i should wait for 24h. the only advice was that for long term storage the thermostat should be set at least to 2 (-18C). so i thought, ok since its the first time i’ll set it to 2.5 and when my digital thermometer read -18C i moved in the goods, which where already frozen to -18C (in the old freezer) !!! doesnt this count ? also nowhere does it states to what tempreture each setting on thermostat corresponds…

( except for te quick frost operation, which activates only if you choose that option through the control panel.but thats for items in normal temperature )
