ParticipantHi everyone. First time poster here and if I have broken any rules please let me know and I will edit this post.
I’m looking for a bit of advice. I bought the AEG L75480WD washer dryer from Currys 2 weeks ago and today it was delivered. I wish I had bought it from John Lewis but it wasn’t available from them then. Anyway I started using it and find that it gives off gasoline smell whenever the dryer is on. The washer dryer is entirely electric and I can’t understand why it gives off this smell.
As an aside the installation performed by the delivery men was pretty poor. They left the machine still about 12 cm hanging out when they left – I asked them about it and they told me it wouldn’t fit all the way under the kitchen counter. My last washer dryer was of the same size and it entirely fits under the counter so I decided to pull it out to check if may be part of the packaging was still hanging out of the back. Then I discovered that the real reason why they couldn’t push the machine all the way in was because the electric cable was caught underneath the machine. I am glad that I’d discovered the problem – I imagine being bounced on by ~100kg of weight daily for hours would surely break the cable pretty fast – but I wish I hadn’t pay that £20 for installation. 🙁

Some residual odours are considered fairly normal and should disappear after using once or twice more. Keep an eye on it and if the problem continues for longer than that then contact Currys to get it checked out.
Your installation story is so common place and typical of Currys. We aren’t the least bit surprised as these days they employ only brawn and not brains!

Martin thanks a ton for your reassurance that the gasoline smell is normal. Hopefully it will go away by the end of the week and that I won’t need any “help” from Currys any more LOL.

I recently purchased this model, or rather it was a replacement for a faulty LG W/D under my warranty, and have now been using the machine for both washing and drying and the ‘gasoline’ smell when using the dryer does not seem to be disipating at all. I am very glad that the machine is in my small utility room rather than the kitchen where we installed the previous machine otherwise the whole house would smell awfully when the dryer was running.
I have tried running the initial boil wash with no laundry in the machine and have run the ‘CLEAN’ program several times now but the smell does not go away.
Does anyone have any suggestions.
I am beginning to wonder if any manufacturer makes a machine without inherent problems that we have to learn to live with 🙁
Cheers.

Likely as not it is only the dryer function causing the smell and should disappear after a few full, high heat dry cycles. If the smell fails to dissipate in that period then you had best contact the service agent and get it inspected. Out of interest, how many full heat dry cycles have you notched up so far?

Have done at least a dozen cottons/full heat to bone-dry and the smell is still very pungent.

Possible/ a theory only. The plastic thermal conveyer between the door seal and aluminium heater chamber manifold. Possible that this plastic thermal conveyer is the cause of the problem. Next time something similar comes my way I`ll carry out a test to see what happens. Well known that the elements are oiled to stop them getting damp whist machine is in storage before sale but , as everyone else has pointed out, this burns off within a couple of drying cycles. Equally possible however the smell is due to a hot door seal which also occurred to me; perhaps we`ll see at a later date.

Thanks for replies – will give it another week or so and, if the smell does not diminish, I will contact AEG. It does not seem to affect the laundry too much but it sure makes the atmosphere yukky!!!

Best of luck with this. Let us all know. Another thought concerning the door seal you might want to ask AEG before they come out is if the door seal is impregnated with an anti bacteria film……………I know some Haier washing machines door seals are and may be if it is the same on your AEG perhaps that`s the answer. Try to ask the question to the person you speak to and get their full name just in case they, if they come out, try to sting you for a call out charge on as no fault found, What! Surely the trade is not that bad? It can be!

Will certainly let you know how I get on. Wonder if the original poster has still got the problem???

Hi everyone – happy to inform you that the smell has finally gone so I am happy now. So if anyone else has this problem with a new purchase my advice is to stick with it as the smell does eventually go and, as I said previously, it does not affect the washing which you are drying so it must be in the venting somewhere. Thanks again everyone.
