ParticipantFreezer is about 2 years old now, we bought it with 5 year warranty about 6 months ago it was dropping down to -11 and the alarm going off, an engineer came out and said even though its a frost free and shouldnt need defrosting it has frozen up at the back of the fridge and needs defrosting again as i can see the ice build up , this cured the problem but it has come back again. It looks like we will need to defrost it every 6 months to keep it working properly. Is there anything we can do to stop it happening again or is this it until we change it. I personally think its not fit for purpose and AEG should change it.
Cheers.

Did the engineer fit any parts, or just advise that you do a defrost?
The freezer evaporator has to defrost itself periodically – typically two or three times a day, depending on the particular appliance.
Yours is obviously not doing and so there is a problem with the defrost circuit.
This could be thermostats, sensors, actual heater itself, or worse case the pcb that controls it.
You should get them out again, have it repaired under warranty and then get some use out of it.September 9, 2013 at 10:13 pm #400884tally

If it is a frost free and it is not defrosting then you have a fault on the defrost system.
It may have a faulty defrost heater , thermal fuse or sensor on the defrost system.

You need to say defrosting will not cure the fault and you need him to test the defrost system to find out the faulty component to replace.

Yup.
If you notice the food is defrosting it’s a case of “use or lose it”. It is not safe to refreeze it.
Most warranties will not cover consequential damage or loss, food in it would fall into that definition.
It could be anything that’s wrong but it will inevitably be a failure of a component somewhere but, given that it is under warranty, you will need to get Service Force to look at it.
As for the notion that the machine is “not fit for purpose”, I doubt it as explained in detail here:
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buyi … ained.html
Unless the warranty conditions state explicitly that they will cover replacement then the chances of you getting anything by going down that road are close on zero normally. AEG (or Electrolux) may have done something silly to expose themselves to claims in their warranties but, knowing them a bit as I do, I’d very much doubt that.
In any event any claim would be against the retailer and not the manufacturer but, after six months it is down to you to prove that the fault was in existence since new. If you cannot demonstrate that then, realistically and although you may not like this, the chances of claiming successfully is again, pretty much zero.
It is very dependant on the warranty conditions what liability, if any, that the manufacturer will have.

Eng called today and tested components all tested ok but couldnt test PCB board so said that was the only other thing that could go wrong and has changed it out for a new pcb, advised it needs to be defrosted to start working fully, but im happier that he actually stripped it down and tested components as last time they didnt test anything. Fingers crossed its fixed.

Ok, i had to wait to defrost freezer after pcb changed and it ran for 5 days at -18 with nothing in the freezer then after 4 hours of putting food back in the freezer its dropped down to -13 so far what else can be wrong ? at what point do the repair/warranty co say replace it
