Went to a washer repair today (Samsung siphoning) at a posh farmhouse and I remarked on the large AGA F/F with a door about 5 feet wide and large freezer drawer the same width. Customer said it cost the same as a small car and had gone faulty earlier this year and the repair engineer had to come from Italy to fit a new compressor on it at a cost of £900. Apparently the original comp wasn’t powerful enough and a bigger one has now been fitted. I always thought that top end appliance repairs were lucrative- unfortunately they are thin on ground in this neck of the woods. Engineer came from Venice and had about 14 calls to do in the UK.

most of the Aga fridge freezers I have come across are Chinese tat tarted up with some fancy doors and handles. What’s more Aga/ Rangemaster wipe their hands of them the day after the warranty runs out and have very little spares

If the engineer came from Italy, I wonder if the Aga product reaper saw was a rebadged Smeg. I saw something in the trade press recently about Smeg launching some extremely pricey high end refrigeration products, here:

Yes it looked like the luxury Smeg and she said it cost the price of a small car. There was also some fluff about the paint job being done by the motorbike manufacturers Ducati. The compressor must have been gold plated for that price.

Yep, was called on one of these late last year- was a complete surprise to me as I didn’t know they existed! It is basically a sub Zero and a quality lump it was too. The ice maker however was usual Korean tat and that’s what went wrong.Re: AGA F/freezer
A friend who sells refurb appliances had a Rangemaster double door f/f side by side with an identical Haier. On checking new prices the Haier about £750, the Rangemaster £1100.
