ParticipantI require a large american frrdge freezer, and my budget is around £1000 max. I have seen two that i like based on online pictures and reviews (revoo). Can anyone give me plus or negative points on these two fridge freezers
Samsung RSG5DUMH
or
LG GWL227HBQA?I noticed that older samsung FF suffered horrendous problems with ice freezing at the back, does this model suffer the same fault?
LG, never really used or seen any of their kitchen stuff, are they reliable and well made?
Thanks for any help.

Hi
There is the genuine American fridge freezers like Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana which will cost at least a £1000 for a quality machine and then you get the Korean clones like Samsung, LG and Daewoo for around the £700 mark.
Our buying guide on American fridge freezers is worth reading.

Budget is max £1000, and all the “decent” FF seem to sell for £1400 mark.
Whirlpool FF seems to be one of the cheaper quality brands falling into my budget but seems to be mentioned alot on these forums for having problems.
Any significant known problems with the LG or the samsung model listed?

Hi imran,
There’s a reason that any “proper” American fridge freezer is £1400 and upwards, you can start at close on two grand if you want a decent stainless steel one… they’re miles better than the Korean efforts.
Basically, the Korean ones are, in my opinion, inferior and riddled with issues. Probably the more reliable is the LG of the two but, I wouldn’t buy either. The service and support on both is, as is often the case I find with appliances from the Far East, woeful. Parts are an issue, take ages if they’re not UK stocked and, that’s if you can find the right part in the first place.
Basically the mentality from Korea and China appears to be, if it breaks go buy a new one and don’t bother complaining about it because that’s the way it is. None appear to do aftersales very well at all, if they can be bothered to even try.
It’s fine if you get one that doesn’t give any trouble, but that’s the risk you are taking.
That said, Samsung do have a recall on all RS series fridges including, I think, the RS1 series so they are trying to put it right. But I suspect only because there’s a danger that they can blow up and take out half your house when they do from what I can gather.
The base model Whirlpool which is sold under a myriad of brands (just look for the water filter in the lower grill below the door, looks like this) is not fantastic but, IMO, better than the Koreans. That said, you can pay anything from under £1000 for one to well over £1500 if it happens to have a Hotpoint or Smeg badge on the front.
But basically, I normally advise people to look at the GE range and go from there but, even they have problems but that’s more to do with distribution in Europe than reliability issues. They will however cost you more than £1000.
The Beko ones seem to not be giving too many problems, they’ve only been around for a couple of years though and the build quality and durability is unknown thus far.

Participantall valid points
the samsungs are dire, poor build quality, numerous issues adn they never seem to run for more than 6 months ( you wouldnt believe the numbers)
the beko ones arent a big seller, but , again, there have been issues
i have an lg, its been brilliant, 2 yrs and going strong, no problems… but ive seen some bad ones of them too
thats the difficulty doing warranty repairs, u only see the bad ones
you need to spend the money… sadly, word on the street is that the uk maytag operation isnt fairing too well, and going forward that could cause problems too
its too tough to call, youll hear a million conflicting reports, although most will condemn samsung
i do like the whirlpools, they seem well built, the later ones seem a great deal better.. hopefully youll get one with that ‘slight’ pcb issue modified
hey.. u asked…

hi
the Samsung RSG5DUMH hasnt had any real faults other than the customers getting used to it in my service area.yes there is a recall on the RS”! but how many other manufacturers are ther just hiding under the covers a saying go away.i know of at least 3 with major faults that they wont acknowledge.
There again the LG service has a less than 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} 1st time repair rate and extortionate parts cost.

Thanks for the comments,
From the reviews on revoo (around 169 user reviews), the samsung is rated at 9.3 out of 10. Not sure if this is new owner syndrome where they all love their appliance and before its broken down.

I really cant go over my budget of £1000 and in terms of size and looks, the only fridge freezers that fitted were the samsung and LG.
Cant really find any info on the LG problems but I am hoping the Samsung RSG5DUMH has ironed out the problems with the previous generations of samsung FF.
Can anyone reccomend any of the Whirlpool FF’s and provide model numbers?
