ParticipantHi All
Just after a recomendation, after thinking about a new kitchen, me and the other half have decided to get one of those big american style fridge freezers. It must have an icemaker. So what make to get ? I know a lot of people seem to have Samsung ones, but do i go for something better made, such as liberreh (or however ots spelt) of fisher Paykel.
Whats your experiences of them.
Many thanks
Mike

hi mike, if you wanted an American fridge freezer, then i’d search around to see if there any of the old American built admiral machines knocking about still.
the modern one is whirlpool built and imo, not as good.
the liebherr is different as it isn’t one big fridge, but two full width appliances bolted together and as such is much wider than the things you see all the time.
most of the units on sale aren’t American, but ‘American style’.
the main difference being in the climate class that the appliances are made to operate in and therefore by definition, the build quality.
the liebherr would be my choice, but they pulled their side by side off the market just for now.August 24, 2013 at 11:36 am #399851kwatt

The GE’s aren’t all that bad but, service is now through GDHA and spares are wildly expensive IMO.
Of the Samsung/Whirlpool (+ clones)/LG tribe at the lower end I’d plump for LG probably as the best of a bad bunch. Beko also do one but it’s an unknown quantity as they’re fairly new to the sector.
To go better than those mentioned you’re looking at spending thousands of pounds on a Wolf, Viking and so on but they tend to be over £10K.
But that gives you an idea of what you can expect from one sub-£1000, less than a tenth the cost of the best in class and less than half the cost of anything worthwhile.

Hi Thanks for the replys. Ive contacted Liebherr and they are going to introduce the amarican style side by side in oct/nov into the UK.
I think we will go for something £1k+ as we dont want to be replacing it in 5 years time due to poorly made components.
I think Miele make one but the cost of that is way above my budget.August 28, 2013 at 9:34 pm #399853ELDAR59

Well the liebherr will be 3k plus for a side by side. The Miele fridge is a liebherr with a Miele badge.
Good luck with your search.September 2, 2013 at 7:47 pm #399854speedo61

I purchased a Samsung RFG23 American Fridge Freezer in May from Curry’s. Beautiful machine with built in Ice maker. Never managed to get one single cube of Ice from it so far. Makes all the right noises but no ice. Engineers been out twice and it is now been diagnosed as, according to the engineers – ‘beyond economic repair’. £1600 worth of machine not worth repairing. I guess better to get a new one rather than tons of bits being replaced
Samsung is eventually going to replace it after several phone calls. Now they (Samsung) have no stock and Curry’s may have some in stock in two weeks but I’m not very hopeful. Nobody will contact me I have to call back in two weeks and see what progress there is. Somehow I can see this going on for a long time, I wonder if I will get Ice in my cider for next Summer?
As for customer service – don’t expect to much in the way of wanting to ensure you are looked after! I feel a Hashtag Samsung fail coming on if not fixed soon.

Currys should have sorted that out for you, it’s the retailer’s responsibility, not Samsung’s.
Although, the buck is often passed. :rolls:

Woke up this morning to find freezer completely defrosted and fridge warm despite the indicator lights saying otherwise, has anyone else had this problem. Tried switching off for 10 mins and it all seems to be working but all that meat will have to be eaten tonight, anyone on the Atkins diet?
