    Hi There,

We’ve nearly finished our brand new kitchen and want to get an american fridge freezer to complete it. Our budget is around £800, but we could stretch to north of 1k if it would make the difference. We’ve been eyeing up:

    Numerous Samsungs from £700-£900.

    LG GWL227YBQ – around £800.

GE GC23LDC – can be had for around 1k with current deals.

BOSCH KAN58A40GB – around the same price as the GE.

I’ve read that anything that isnt American is a cheap copy of the real thing, is this right? Is it worth spending the extra to get the GE over the LG? Ideally we want water and ice but with plenty of freezer space too, the Samsungs seem to lose quite a bit.

I’ve also just seen the Maytag MC2028HXKB for 1k, with a 5 year warrenty, are these any better?

    Any other advice or recommendations?

    Thanks.

You make your choice and pays your money, plus you get what you pay for most of the time.
Old garage owner friend always said “you can buy a good car of a bad dealer and a bad car of a good dealer”

the american fridge is generally a better product than an american ‘style’ one.

this is largely due to build quality and because the american products go all around the world, you’ll find that the climate class of the fridge is higher than the american style ones.

look inside the fridge compartment at the label, this will tell you where the fridge is made and also the climate class of the appliance.

even some of the american brands are now using appliances from elsewhere.

    Thanks for the replies.

Looks like we’ll probably go for the GE then.

How does Maytag compare with GE? They both come with a 5 year warrenty so are more appealing than the others.

Maytag are owned by Whirlpool and are currently experiencing -electrical falts with the start relays,

The part causing the trouble probably isnt made by Whirlpool/maytag just bought in as part of the compressor.
In the end the assemblers of appliances are buying in components and manufacturing possibly only the cabinet parts, items like compressors, fan motors, thermostats, evaporators are very rarly made in house by the manufactures so you will often find the same make of compressor or fan motor on different makers machines.
Perhaps too much choice, choose the appliance you like and if it’s at a compettaive price go for it, there is then a certain element of finger crossing as far as trouble free operation goes.
